Do you ever feel guilty for something that someone accuses you of, even if you know that you didn't do it?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) April 20th, 2011

I have been doing a lot of thinking about this lately, especially with a lot that is going on in our lives.. and I do.
I often find myself feeling overwhelmed with guilt, even if I am pretty sure I haven’t done anything wrong. Even if I am completely sure I haven’t done anything wrong, I start to question myself.

Does anyone else do this?

Oh, man, all the time! If I hear an ambulance go by my house I fleetingly wonder if somehow I did something wrong. (Extreme, I know, but it speaks to the “always blamed” thing) Now, if I start to do that I make a point to stop myself. Visualizing a big red STOP sign helps. Corny, but effective for me.

@JilltheTooth I totally hear you. It doesn’t take much to get me wondering if I’ve done something wrong, maybe on accident or without even realizing it. It makes me crazy! I will try the stop sign thing, for sure.

I suppose initially but then I tell myself to stop it.

I can be happily doing the speed limit or sitting at a stop light and if a police car pulls up, I feel guilty. I had to go through a check stop before xmas an hadn’t had alcohol for days, I felt guilty.

I have to echo what @lucillelucillelucille said: hell no. I’m not that type of person. I only feel guilt when I actually have done something wrong (and trust me, there is no avoiding it. It hits hard when it happens). But unless I have actually done something wrong, I will not feel guilty, no matter who is accusing me or what I am being accused of.

If i’m accused of doing something I haven’t, or indeed of being something i’m not, I just laugh & call those people by their given name….....Total Tw@. Works for me all day long.

I don’t feel guilty, I feel indignant and mad at being accused of something I didn’t do. I recently had a lady at work talking some crap lies on me and I told her to her face if she was going to talk shit to make sure it was true shit.

Yes. I think it’s the very fact that you’re being accused of doing It that makes you feel guilty. Especially when there is no one to hear your protestations and PROOF of innocence..

As a resident black sheep/scapegoat, yeah I feel guilty for way too much that I haven’t done.

Always. I feel guilty when anything happens. Even if no one actually accuses me. Cop goes by is a good example, even walking out of a store sometimes (like when you leave Walmart and they have those people by the exit looking for shoplifters). The other day, I apologized to my husband for saying “I love you” too much. He just looked at me, and I said… “Ok, that was kind of weird. Sorry.” I apologized for apologizing. We laughed.

Years ago when I was a teenager, I worked in a Hallmark store and there had been a robbery while I wasn’t even there. I showed up to work and the cops were there and I immediately felt guilty. Stupid, stupid brain. Even worse, I look guilty. I’m very fair skinned and I blush and get fidgety when I feel this way.

The plus side is, this makes it nearly impossible for me to lie.
