How to help relieve sore/tender uterus during pregnancy?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) April 20th, 2011 from iPhone

I’m 19 weeks along and the past week I’ve noticed a very tender uterus. I assume this is caused from it growing. Possibly because the baby kicking and moving around so much (which he seems to be doing a lot of lately). Whatever the cause, is there anything I can do to get relief? Just to get off the couch is difficult. Moving too quick, coughing, etc is painful. Any advice?

I wish there was! I’m right there with you (just at 31 weeks along instead of 19). The best thing I can suggest is to be sure you get up slowly. Roll out of bed if necessary instead of trying to sit right up. Some of what you are feeling could be round ligament pain. The best thing for round ligament pain is to sit down, relax a bit, and let it pass. Sometimes a warm (warm, not hot) bath can help too. Some of it is also because of the way your muscles are moving to make room for your expanding uterus. I hope you can get more comfortable soon. You’re almost halfway done. :)

Wow @Seaofclouds! You don’t have much longer. Just a few more weeks.

Congrats to both of you – @ItalianPrincess1217 whom I’ve “known” since way back when and to @seaofclouds one of my fave jellies.

Warm baths @ItalianPrincess1217 helped me a bit. There’s not much else you can do. BTW, it’s most likely round ligament pain at this stage, and it is not pleasant, but will subside in a week or so.

@seazen_ Thank you!
@SpatzieLover I’ve been hearing that a lot lately. What exactly is “round ligament pain”? Just caused from stretching of the uterus?

Yes, it’s caused by the size of the uterus stretching your round ligaments. The ligaments are stretching beyond anything they’ve ever stretched to. If you choose to have a 2nd or a 3rd baby, this will get less noticable.

You may want to take some Tylenol if it’s really bad. If this continues past 22 weeks, there are some other meds your OB can give you. For me, the round ligament pain went and the migraines (I have chronic headaches) came on…so meds were a necessity.

Do not do any extra exercising at this time…just walks if it’s this bad.

Congrats @Seaofclouds!

Thanks everyone.

@ItalianPrincess1217 I hope yours goes away soon. I definitely had the round ligament pain and now most of my discomfort (not really pain at this point) comes from the baby finding positions that just aren’t comfortable. I still get some round ligament pain when I move too quickly sometimes though… ohh and when I stretch to reach something up high (I’m short). Hang in there!

@Seaofclouds The reaching always gets me. I’m 5’1. I feel your pain!
