What are some strange numbers you've gotten phone calls from?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) April 26th, 2011

I shit you not, I just got a phone call from 123–456-7890. Another time, I got a call from 888–888-8888. How weird is that?

Do you remember any of the strange numbers from your caller ID?

The weirdest ones I ever had were ones while my husband was deployed. Sometimes it would just be a few random digits, like 6204 or something like that, not even a complete phone number. It was one way to know it was him though. :)

If I don’t recognize it, I don’t pay attention, and I don’t answer.

It’s the reverse 911 call local police use when notifying people in town of police matters, “Lock your doors Bank robbers on the lam”.

I once got a call from a number that was exactly the same as mine expect the last 2 digits were flipped. They left a message saying that I kept calling them, but I definitely wasn’t. It was strange.

I once misdialled a number and the person I wanted to speak to answered the phone. It turned out that the number I had dialled belonged to her neighbour who she was visiting at the time.

I once received a picture message on my phone from someone I didn’t know. He was holding some long, slender blue object at his groin, perhaps alluding to some form of innuendo.

My mom’s gotten calls from 123–456-7890. I don’t have caller ID, so I can’t contribute.

But my parents’ phone number is almost exactly the same as a friend of theirs’, with one number transposed. So when my parents get a call for Ken, and answer, “No, his number is 3794”, they freak out the wrong-number dialler :)

I once got a call from a fired up coach, apparently trying to get a hold of his assistant coach. He was pretty angry about their last game, from what I could tell.

I also got a parole officer once and then soon after a therapist.

I get automated calls from my kids schools sometimes and it shows up something like 490–000-0000.

@Seelix made me think about my parents number being 1 off from an eye doctor in town. When I was a kid it used to crack me up when my dad would talk to people and make “appointments” for them. I’m sure they were ticked when they showed up at the doctors office and didn’t really have an appointment.

@knitfroggy – I love it!

There was a taxi company in my hometown whose number was 555-TAXI. Mr. Fiance used to live with his sister, whose number is 555-TEXI. Oh yeah, drunk calls all night long. Mr. Fiance used to tell people “Yeah, sure, he’ll be there in 10 minutes”. His sister just turned the ringer off after about 10pm. Happily, 555-TAXI is no more :)

You guys keep talking about numbers that are one digit off- we always get calls for the post office. Our last four digits are 1122, the post office is 1121.

When someone calls you from google voice or skype it can be pretty weird. I think skype is like 0000123456… and google voice can be quite odd numbers as well.

It’s Google Voice! My friend in Mexico calls me on 0000123456789 all the time!

@Seelix That’s fantastic! Drunks wanting a taxi calls have got to be way more entertaining than eye doctor appointments! I can only imagine the fun my dad would have had with that!

My cell phone gets calls from the County jail, people looking for a chiropractor, and bail bondsman. Yikes.

I can create whatever combination of digits and name you want and make the call.

Just provide the number and i will prove it!!

@blueiiznh Call me as Donald Trump from 666–666-6666.

@blueiiznh Isn’t caller ID spoofing is slightly illegal.

@Seelix I was going to post that number, I was just called a few days ago from 123–456-7890. I didn’t pick up.
