Is Osama bin Laden's death President Obama's 9/11?

Asked by jerv (31076points) May 1st, 2011

The defining event of President G.W. Bush’s presidency was the 9/11 attacks. He gained much support (whether deserved or not) for pretty much being in the Oval Office when it happened.

So, as the question states, is the death of Osama bin Laden the defining event of Barack Obama’s presidency? Do you think that it is an event of sufficient magnitude to overshadow the rest of his term of office?

I don’t think so. Getting back the American economy back on its feet will be President O’s 9/11 significant term defining event.

This is his Sadam Husein.

I think this will blow over surprisingly fast as there is so much other bullshit going badly here that needs attention. I’m enjoying the ride though.

I think that the Republicans won’t allow this to get the attention that this deserves. Why? Simply because of their disgusting, childish vendetta to try and devalue anything that this president does. This is a great day for the world. Its sad that so many will refuse to recognize it and/or work against giving everyone else involved the credit they deserve just because it happened under this president.

I’m pretty sure that this means that all the Republicans that want to run in 2012 should save their cash for 2016. As Joe Biden would say, “This is a big fucking deal.”

No. He will be remembered for his 66th round of golf that he had to cut short to return to the White House to be briefed at OBL’s death.

@Cruiser That very article, at the bottom, tells us the real reason he cut the game short. Would you rather him sit around twiddling his thumbs while preparations were being made to carry out his orders? He was in the office when he needed to be and there was likely little productive that he could do while waiting on the news.

@Cruiser….. So the president should never, ever, ever get a break of any kind?

marinelife's avatar

I hope that the good will that it generates will carry over.

roundsquare's avatar

@klutzaroo @Dutchess_III You make good points. That doesn’t mean that it won’t be used against him in a media campaign.

klutzaroo's avatar

@roundsquare The people leading such a campaign are likely to be so absurd in themselves that they have no credibility.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@klutzaroo we wish! Look at the ridiculous brouhaha over Obama’s birth certificate. That should have died within the first week!

roundsquare's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yep. Absurd people get screen time.

Cruiser's avatar

@klutzaroo There is a lot of “productive” things Obama could do while waiting besides golf….like fix our economy to name one!

mazingerz88's avatar

@Cruiser I’ve liked and respected a lot of your answers but this one is just petty and way beneath you in my view. Are you serious?

Cruiser's avatar

@mazingerz88 Well then you should know by now most of digs at BO are tongue in cheek. But I will stand behind my hard-earned disdain for his horrible handling of our economy.

jerv's avatar

@Cruiser Need I remind you that the President cannot fix the budget himself? Congress is where budgets are made; the President merely approves/vetoes what the squabbling children in the legislative branch put on his desk.

Cruiser's avatar

@jerv I am aware of this and seeing as he led a Democraticly controlled Congress for 2 years and we are no better off than we were over 2 years ago is very very frustrating for me. AFAICT we are in even deeper shit than we were when he took over and no end in sight. Promises, promises, promises….

jerv's avatar

@Cruiser For him too. I mean, fixing the economy would boost his approval rating so high he would be untouchable in the 2012 election, so you know that if he could, he would.

klutzaroo's avatar

When there are people who are more interested in blocking his every move than the good of the people, Obama’s going to end up spinning his wheels more than accomplishing things. His fault? No. The fault of the selfish, childish people who only want to impede any progress we can make as a country for fear that success will be attributed to the president? Absolutely.

Dutchess_III's avatar

BTW @Cruiser….according to your own blog, which admits it’s ”..the only 24/7, independent, and totally unauthorized White House blog.” Obama was back in plenty of time to oversee, in real time, what was going down in Pakistan. That is, if he was golfing. Your blog author can say anything he wants. He can lie through his teeth if he wants.
