When I heard Bin Laden was dead, my initial thoughts were _________?

Asked by ucme (50047points) May 2nd, 2011

Speaking of your own personal reaction here, just to clarify. So, the homeless santa, the dirty wizard is no more. He’s now an ex tyrant, in short, he’s bleedin demised. With that in mind, could you portray how you felt when you first heard the news? Barely a blip on your radar, or a keenly felt feeling of relief, or whatever. Share if you want, that’d be good.

“Wow, took long enough”.

I figured we’d have his head on a platter within 12 months of 9/11/01.

HungryGuy's avatar

There’ll be retaliation by the terrorists, and an excuse for the Americans to start another war…

Ten years to catch a man in flip-flops! :-/

JLeslie's avatar

I wonder if this will really change the threat of terrorism and Al Quaeda.

Coloma's avatar

Just the end of a very sad chapter with a very sad and misguided human being.
I do not believe we should ever glorify the death of anyone, no matter how insane or cruel they have been. This just reduces us to their level.

The man was not born evil, he was CREATED, by his culture, belief system and his own abusive society and family. Just sad.

“Who the hell is Usama?”

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Yeah I thought it was a typo at first until I remembered Usama=Osama.

“Radical.”

My first thoughts were “Yes! It’s about time!”

cazzie's avatar

‘Finally.’ and ‘I bet they caught him in Pakistan.’ and then did my ‘I-told-you-so-10yearsago’ dance.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

I felt a sense of amazement that we’d finally caught him and wonder at his hiding place.

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

OH GOODY!

I was delighted, as were many Americans and others around the world. Good riddance.

Unfortunately, although he’s dead, I’m sure there are many more like him——just like cockroaches, you can never be sure that killing just one will get rid of them all.

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

I was surprised…they hadn’t been able to find him all that time

flutherother's avatar

I was surprised he had been killed and I was surprised he had been living in a mansion. I thought he was in a mud hut or a cave somewhere.

Facade's avatar

“Oh, OK. I wonder if his people will retaliate…”

tinyfaery's avatar

Yeah, right.

Ron_C's avatar

My first though was, I’ll believe it when I see it. The second was how is it that the current president did in two years that the previous president failed to do in seven years?

tranquilsea's avatar

Does it even matter anymore? He had to be brought to justice but it seems like such an afterthought now.

cazzie's avatar

@Ron_C I think that’s an odd assessment.. that it took Obama two years… I think it took the US military 10 years, but Obama didn’t let the military give up the hunt, so there’s that. ( I just knew he was being harboured in Pakistan…) Perhaps now, the US will do a better job to friend India in that region? hmmm…

MilkyWay's avatar

My first thought was ”Really? Is he really dead?
Then I thought things will get worse when the news reader said that Al Qaeda will ’avenge’ his death…

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

1.) Is it true?
2.) How much I respect President Obama for setting goals, putting together a strategic plan with the help of others, and following through, no matter how long it takes.
3.) Concern for the well-being of all of us, not only in the US, but other countries, that retaliation might occur.

Randy's avatar

My first thought was “Whatever”. I don’t have enough time to worry about some skinny radical that was hiding in Pakistan, finally found and killed by a US troop that has been overseas for way too many years (and recently not getting paid).

It seems more like politics than justice to me.

MacBean's avatar

“Cool. Only took ten years.”

Ron_C's avatar

@cazzie don’t forget that the military had him in Tora Bora but the higher-ups let him through. Bush kind of gave up and when your boss give up on a project the juniors aren’t likely to put too much effort in it.

I think that we should work on our relationship with India but shouldn’t give up on Pakistan. Don’t forget the government is in danger of being taken over by religious zealots.

cazzie's avatar

@Ron_C They had him pinned down before? Bush had no idea what he was doing with anything but shaking hands and kissing babies. I call him the ‘Used Car Salesman’ of Presidents. Splitting the effort like that and sending troops to Iraq was the boniest of bonehead things to do. He never understood the politics, but listened to his oil buddies.

You’re right.. looking at it like that, I guess by reworking the focus of the fight, Obama deserves a lot more credit. I am worried about Pakistan. The country was founded by brutal Islamic separatists, so their extreme views shouldn’t come as such a shock.

“Damn. He’s pretty good at hide and seek.”

erichw1504's avatar

“Can we do ‘punch-punch-pass’ with him to every American?”

MasterAir16's avatar

Darn! I wished he captured alive intsead being dead.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@MasterAir16 May I ask why? I mean this sincerely. I have heard the same sentiment from one other person, and it makes me wonder what the difference would be if he were still alive and just under arrest. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

MasterAir16's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer If he were alive today and been captured; We can see him suffer while we celebrate the victory.

Qingu's avatar

@MasterAir16, I’d like to think that most of us aren’t savages who take pleasure in our enemies’ suffering.

MasterAir16's avatar

@Qingu True. Then my answer is worthless.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@MasterAir16 Thank you for responding with the details of your view. As for your question as to ‘Why not?’, I suppose the answer is that I am not a proponent of ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’. In Bin Laden’s case, there is no doubt that he was involved in terrorist attacks and that it was highly unlikely to end while he was alive.

Now that he is dead, the strategies on all sides will have to change. For the US, as well as other countries, there may be a temporary sigh of relief, but it would be foolish to let down our guard. Had he been captured and taken to any country alive, it is likely that it would have resulted in execution without an apology or regret for his actions. It would also leave a country more vulnerable to more terrorist threats and attacks than we are currently under in this situation.

PS, your answer is not worthless. Many people feel the same way that you do. IMO, it is a knee-jerk reaction based upon what tugs at our hearts. This is a time where logic needs to take the driver’s seat in looking at the situation from all angles.

If I had raised Osama he’d be a green, nature nut, hippie dude wandering around with his goose herd and growing sunflowers in the forest and probably would have had his PhD in sociology. lol

Think of baby Osama as his mother did. :-(

@ddude1116 Yes <groan> I did.

CaptainHarley's avatar

“It’s about time.” It was a feeling of relief that he had finally been brought to justice, but I never celebrate the death of anyone, not even those whose deaths I caused ( either directly or indirectly ).

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

“Wow, I can’t believe they finally found him. Hmm…why is everyone celebrating? Doesn’t anyone worry about retaliation?”

Actual thoughts.
Yes! And about freaken time.

Faze44's avatar

Cynical, not impressed, disbelief at the joyous celebrations occuring straight after the announcement that people believed one persons word without seeing his body though acting on a ” bushy” word that initiatied all the negativity a few years ago, and wonderment at the lack of thought in what repurcussions could follow..bizarre,freakish and flabbergasted at the outdated, stagnant, eye for an eye practise used in todays society
