What size pots does one use for herbs?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) May 2nd, 2011

I need to transplant some herbs I’ve started and was wondering what size pots to put them in.Specifically,Italian oregano,sweet basil,parsley and most importantly,German chamomile.
Thank you for your thyme! ;)

If you’re going to plant a single herb to a pot, a 6 to 8 inch pot is about the smallest to go and still get a nice sized plant. Some of the herbs would go well together and make a nice visually appealing arrangement. I’m not sure of the italian oregano’s growing habits, it might be invasive. For a mix 10 to 12 inches would do it. You could go smaller on the pots and replant more often, but I prefer more mature plants for more intense herbal properties.

Mine that I grow on my deck are 12” across, 15” deep, but I grow a lot of basil, oregano and parsley. The oregano will come back year after year, as will the mint. I grow a boatload of basil to make pesto, and freeze the pesto, then I make up packets of marinara herbs and freeze those as well. Basic motto: if some is good, more is better, all is the best of all. I am a small person who thinks in extremes. ;-)

@JilltheTooth -I like your attitude!:)
In those pots you use,how many plants do you fit in?

I can put 4–6 basil starts in each one, 2 oreganos per (since they come back, they get bigger each year), 1 (only 1!) mint as they will take over the universe, and one or two parsley starts, they grow fast and bushy. The pots are dark, retain heat well and are in a place, with 4–5 hours of direct sun each day. I use Soil Moist in the pots to reduce the amount of watering I have to do (I’m lazy and forgetful). I’ve found it in just about every garden store I’ve been in. My thumb’s not particularly green but I have great luck with my herb garden!

I have thyme, oregano, and chives all in the same planter. It is the kind that fits over the railing on your deck. The dimensions are 24’’ long x 10’’ wide x 4–5’’ deep.
I would highly recommend checking out square-foot gardening, as it has helped me learn the basics to growing veggies and herbs and is a very simple method. I have been using this method for 4 years now with tremendous success in a very limited area.
The author of Square Foot Gardening wrote that for most crops, 6’’ of soil is plenty.

@chris6137 -Thank you.I will see if I can get ahold of that book as I am planning a raised bed this year too. :)

Here’s the official website for square foot gardening. It seems to be as informative as the book.
