What book is this?

Asked by global_nomad (1906points) May 2nd, 2011

Okay, so I’m going out on a limb here. I was at the bookstore a few weeks ago and was looking at a book I was interested in buying. I was going to look the book up online to learn a bit more about it but I can’t remember the name or author. All I know was that it was fiction, seemed to be of the southern gothic style, took place in Florida, was by a new female author, and the title had something to do with alligators and orphanages or something. From what I remember the book was about a little girl who was an orphan and had to live with the her uncle in the swamplands of Florida. Anyone have any suggestions?

@linguaphile You know, that sure does sound like it but I know that wasn’t the title or the book cover. It’s weird though, because that is almost exactly what I described. Thanks for the link! I’m going to have to check that one out.

It’s Swamplandia by Karen Russell and it’s awesome! I’m reading it now.

Thanks @Blueroses! It’s actually not, but the book I was looking for was right below Swamplandia!. I was looking for St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised By Wolves and now I’ve found it! But I’m definitely going to check out Swamplandia! now too! Yay! Apparently there are more books with this theme than I thought…

Oh, Very cool @global_nomad. The Swamplandia book is a continuation of one of the stories in St. Lucy’s…
She’s a really terrific writer. Some of the sentences just stop you cold with their beauty. Enjoy!
