(NSFW) Is it ok to watch erotic or pornographic stuff?

Asked by krrazypassions (1355points) May 8th, 2011

I am wondering whether it is right or wrong if one watches porn in one’s privacy in small or moderate amounts without causing any sort of harm to anyone else?

As long as children or animals are not involved in the porn, I think it’s perfectly fine to watch it.

I watch a fair amount of porn. My palms aren’t hairy and I have never raped anyone.

I believe that watching porn can lead to trouble if it becomes a fixation.

I also believe it supports an industry that is demeaning and dangerous to its participants especially women.

I think it’s okay as long as it’s not having a negative effect on your everyday life. If it starts interfering with other things in your life, it’s time to take a step back and take a look at what’s going on.

If you can get over what happens in the porn industry then I don’t see a problem as long as it’s not kiddie porn.

Given the parameters of your question given in the details, I see no problem. If you’re not hurting anyone else and you’re not fixated, you seem to have neither a moral problem nor a psychological problem.

As for the industry, I’ve had demeaning and dangerous jobs as well. But for some reason, no one seems to worry about them. It’s only when sex enters the picture that the phrase “you could always just quit” drops out of the conversation.

How do we define fixation? When I was 20 I was jerking off three+ times a day. I still had a full time job and went to school. I have never heard of someone called a functional masturbater like alcoholics are referred to.

Are there seriously people that can’t get off the couch all day because they are watching porn and shooting powder?

Under the terms which you describe, of course there’s nothing wrong with it. Just be careful not to inflict the “blistered tip” on yourself. A common injury suffered by wankers the world over.

Absolutely. In fact in honor of Mother’s Day I think I’ll go watch some MILF porn.

jrpowell's avatar

@AstroChuck :: I took a different route.

AstroChuck's avatar

Wow. I know a couple relatives I could use that on.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@johnpowell Thank you for that. I just sent a shitton of them to my mum.

I remember watching an episode of True Life where a 20 something year old guy who (lives with his grandmother) does nothing all day but watch porn. He was so addicted to porn to the point where he blew off a job interview just to watch porn.

HungryGuy's avatar

Of course it is. Anything that’s peaceful and consensual is okay to do

Sure it is, knock yourself out or knock one off….. as long as you’re happy…... :-/

I think you answered your own question.

I dunno…

…ask your “significant other”.

Depends what you watch for porn.

Animals / kids / rapes aren’t good for your mental health.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I watch and enjoy porn and I see no problem with that. Like @KatetheGreat said, as long as children or animals (or rape as @Hibernate pointed out) then it’s fine.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Hibernate Rapes like actual, or rape like simulated, and no one was actually hurt?

It’s okay in a sense that it has nothing to do with you as a person in that it doesn’t have anything to do with your character or will not have any side effects (if it overtakes your life, it can be like every other addiction). Porn, as an industry, is a highly debatable venture and some people decry it for the images it supports and for how it treats its members. But not all porn is made equally – there is porn done by the community for the community (whatever your community is) where people are voluntarily doing it and are treated well and understand the risks. Of course, there is such a thing, in my opinion, as doing something voluntarily but playing into larger patterns in that when no other avenues are all that available for making money, certain demographics will consider porn and that’s fundamentally unjust. It’s complicated. I watch it. I try to pick my porn wisely but I don’t always.

Plucky's avatar

I agree with @KatetheGreat ..I’d add though, as long as everything in it is consensual.

Hibernate's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs not even role playing rape but if that’s your fetish than feel free to do it.

Both are wrong in my opinion.
