Why isn't "Live and let live" one of the Ten Commandments?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30951points) May 10th, 2011

I don’t see anything remotely similar to Live and let live anywhere in the top ten. And I don’t think I can consider the whole as a summation of the concept either.

You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol.
You shall not lift up the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
Honor your father and mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness.
You shall not covet.
The Ten Commandments for Dummies

It’s not even close. Though I don’t really have a problem with anything on the existing list, it seems incomplete without Live and let live.

What suggestions would you make to amend the law?

What suggestions would you make to amend the law?
Since they’re already written, ‘Let by gones, be by gones!’

If you’re fighting for the survival of a group, live and let live can be a bad policy – it means others are free to leave the group, and you may loose the team you need to live.

You shall not use religion as an excuse to plunder and kill for territory.

I think it went down something like this.

The ten commandments were given to jews [ I’m sure you knew that ]
Nowdays whoever tries to live according to what is supposed to be a christian life he’ll live according to what Jesus taught us. He gave us only 2 [ wich summed all the others Love thy God AND Love thy neighbour ]

I love one of DMX’s songs

(Thou shall not steal)
But, what if he stole from me?
(Thou shall not kill)
But what if he’s tryin’ to kill me?
(Thou shall not, take my, name in vain, no matter how hard it rains, withstand the pain)

Here’s a modern version of the ten commandments in a form that could be useful to both atheists and believers:

1. Do not be greedy. Do not worship any material goods more than the ethical principles that work for the good of all. Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. If you are a believer, worship God as the motivating force behind all ethical actions.

2. Everyone should maintain vigilance and reject any cult of personality. If you are a believer, do not make idols or images in the form of God. An idol can be anything or anyone you worship by giving it more importance than God.

3. Everyone should respect our environment and all life on our planet. If you are a believer, keep in mind that to respect God is to respect nature. Do not treat God’s name lightly or with disrespect.

4. Dedicate or set aside a regular day each week for rest to slow down, ponder, contemplate and absorb wisdom to create a life of significance. If you are a believer, worship the Lord on your day of rest.

5. Give honor to your loving father and loving mother by treating them with respect.

6. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. We should live and let live. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. No one shall be held in slavery or servitude. No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Do not deliberately murder a fellow human being.

7. Do not have sexual relations with anyone other than your spouse or partner, unless you have agreed to live in an open relationship.

8. Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property. Do not steal or take anything that doesn’t belong to you, unless you have been given permission to do so.

9. Be honest. Do not tell a lie unless you need to avoid offense or you are in emergency situations to protect yourself or others. Do not bring a false accusation against another person.

10. Do not desire anything or anyone that does not belong to you. Comparing yourself to others and longing to have what they have leads to jealousy, envy and other sins. If you are a believer, be content by focusing on the blessings God has given you and not what he has not given you.

@mattbrowne a christian has only 2 rules / commandments to follow.
Love thy God.
Love thy neighbour like yourself.

All what you stated there are included in these two. BUT we have to follow these ones not others. Loving your neighbour including not lying / beating / wanting their stuff etc.

Those are a few rules for a good moral conduit but they are not suited for christians because our Bible states very simple what we have to do. Worked 2 thousand years ago and it still works today.

mattbrowne's avatar

@Hibernate – I agree and these two rules can be the basis for a modern version making it easier for people in the 21st century. When the Bible was written some aspects were different like not being able to pollute an entire planet. Some views have changed e.g. slavery. Love thy neighbour like yourself is not compatible with having slaves. Other aspects are indeed timeless. They worked 2 thousand years ago and it still works today.

ragingloli's avatar

“Love thy neighbour like yourself is not compatible with having slaves.”
Sure it is. All you have to do is consider slaves “things” and not “persons”. After all, only “persons” can be “neighbours”.
(incidentally, that is what slaves were considered to be, things, property, like cattle and wives)

That’s the reason we can’t freeze all views of the world and declare they are valid eternally. I’m sure people in the year 4024 will disagree with some general consensus when their historians analyze the Fluther archives (assuming Fluther is preserved).
