Are my NHL (hockey) cards worth anything?

Asked by rawpixels (2668points) May 10th, 2011

I used to collect hockey cards, mostly in the 1990s. I have tons and was wondering if they are worth anything. If anyone has any suggestions on sites which list values, I would appreciate it. :)

Wasn’t there a Gretzky rookie card that just sold for more than 90 grand?

Hmmm, that would be nice, because I think I have one.

@rawpixels Give you 20 bucks for it. :) Sweet. Good for you if you do. You can put the kids through school.

I’d suggest you take them to a card shop or hobby shop. I’m sure there are sites that can help you figure out approximate values, but for the important stuff (Gretz’ rookie card, for example), you’d need someone to appraise the condition of the cards, because that can figure in to how much they’re worth.

Collectables are only worth what people are willing to pay for them. In all honesty, I think you’ll have a hard time finding anyone to buy NHL cards for anywhere near what you paid for them. Maybe if you pass them down to your children and then they do the same for a few generations they’ll be worth something but I highly doubt you’ll ever see a return on them. Your children’s children’s children might though. You can always ask around shops that still buy that sort of thing (if you can find one) or post them on a site like Craigslist and try to sell them for whatever you think they’re worth.

Good luck! Maybe you’ll have a gem in there or find a rich fanatic. Stranger things have happened.

Buy a Beckett pricing guide, grab a beer and a lawn chair, enjoy. :)
