I am really big on nice smells. What is your favorite scented candle and/or plug-in?

Asked by Jude (32198points) May 12th, 2011

I love Fire by Henri Bendell and a few from Bath and Body Works.

I’m looking for new stuff to try. What are your favorites?

I’m currently obsessed with this honeysuckle hand wash I use, so I imagine a honeysuckle candle would smell pretty nice.

The Maison line from Bed Bath Beyond is heavenly. I particularly love the honeysuckle & lavender scented beads.

Mmmm. more stuff the try.

I am high on Wellibutrin right now, so, this is making me even more happy.;-)

Don’t get me wrong: I like nice scents, fresh, floral, littoral, all kinds. But “scented candles” are overpoweringly cloying to me. When I drive past the Yankee Candle outlet store on the highway the odor is enough to gag me.

Frankly, I prefer the funky smell of the unwashed (and needing-a-wash) dorg. Any day of the week. Or bacon.

Most scents, including candles and perfumes are not made from flower essences, but from chemicals. I am very sensitive to strong smells, and the chemicals emitted from your average candle will drive me right out of the area. It’s really awful when I have to use a bathroom where after giving it a proper cleaning, they spray crap around to make it “smell clean”, and sometimes they’ll just skip the cleaning part and spray it to make you think it’s clean. Yikes!

Anyway, there are a few smells I love. One is the smell of a healthfood store that sells bulk herbs and dry foods. I think it’s heavenly. Another smell I love is a combination one part clove, one part tea tree, and one part lavender oils. It’s best if it’s faint rather than strong. Awesome.

Some candles are made not from a combination of essential oils and perfumes like Yankee Candles are made, but actually from pure essential oils. For the connoisseur there is nothing like it.

I recently got a “Summer Berries” candle from Bath and Body Works, and it smells soooooo good! I also like their “Homemade Cookies” and “Bamboo” candles. A few weeks ago they had a promo where their 3-wick jar candles were on for 2 for $25 – not sure how long that sale was for, though.

Jo Malone’s Lime Basil & Mandarin or Pomegranate Noir are both absolutely fantastic. However they are pretty expensive. (£38 for a small one or £260 for a big one – I’ve only ever had one small one)

My mom had this pine tree scented candle that she would use during Christmas time because we had a plastic tree. It was kind of a cute idea, but I most likely wouldn’t have it as an everyday sort of thing. I also really like anything that’s sandalwood scented. It’s really calming for me, for some reason.

I have a scentsy lamp, and buy the scented wax squares to melt in it. My favorite is “silver bells” which sounds Christmasy, but it’s not. They also have one called “cashmere” that I like.

You can’t go wrong with this one and this and this.

@Jude You should try Bed Bath and Beyond if there is one near you. My s/o can’t leave the store without a few candles. I like the light nature scents, lilac, spring meadow, or the vanillas.

I’m not too big on scented candles or other chemically induced scents. They’re just too strong for me. But I do have a few bottles of essential oils, I like pine, cedar and grapefruit.

I use grapefruit scented hand soap from Target (Method is their own brand) and I use grapefruit scented shampoo from Trader Joe’s (Refresh is their own brand)

But what I really like to do is occasionally put out bowls of cedar chips or coffee beans or dried citrus peels.

My favorite can only be bought at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York, but at $150.00 I didn’t buy it. I think they calked it Cade, but it was much softer than pure Cade oil.

I love Banana Nut Bread or Blueberry

Satya Sai Nag Champa Incense I love that fragrance…very soothing!

My favorite place to look for candles is the New Age shop or health food store. They have the most exotic combinations.

Freesia. I get sort-of high from the pleasure of smelling freesia. For me, it’s even better than lilac…

I’m a fan of cucumber-melon, lemongrass, and coconut lime verbena stuff. I also really like the scent of the Gardener’s Hand Therapy lotion from Crabtree and Evelyn. As for candles, the one from @bythebay’s store in Maryland is the best – I think it’s just beachy. (ba dum tch)

My favorite is vanilla bean from bath & Body Works.

Lavender gel soap by Method. I buy it online in big foil refill pouches and use it for hand soap, shower gel, laundry soap and sinktop dish soap. They offer a concentrated gel just for dishes but it doesn’t smell the same.

There’s an amber essential perfume oil by Auric Blends in Amber I like to mix with a dab of body lotion for me or on a rag for dusting furniture with.

My mom buys melting candle cubes in a Pomegranate scent that make our house smell yummy! I don’t know the brand though,

My sweetie buys flowers for the house every few weeks that usually have scent so we have fresh natural smells going on inside too. My mother is a designer and often clips rosemary and citrus from our yard to add into the arrangements.

So obsessed with this candle from Tokyomilk…it’s called Gin & Rosewater.
Seriously, I can’t live without it LOL

rooeytoo's avatar

I just buy bottles of lavender or cinnamon, the essential oils I think they are called. I get them from the lady who sells home made soap at the market. Then I put stuff some cotton into the bottle to make a sort of wick and just sit the bottle behind something on a shelf, it lasts forever and makes a nice subtle scent throughout the rooms.

Carrot Cake, Banana Nut Bread, Cinnamon, or Hawaiian delight candles are awesome.

I loooove church-y, liturgical scents like frankincense, myrrh, orris, copal and benzoin…on the steamy side I am into amber, opium, and cedarwood….mmmmmmmmm.

gm_pansa1's avatar

Lavender and Gardenia.

Similarly from Bath and Body works or one of those stores… I just love the smell of one of those little hand sanitizer things that girls always carry around. It’s the “Japanese Cherry Blossom” one. Similarly, I like Cherry Almond soap. If I am getting ready to eat, though, I like nonscented soap.

Citrus & Sage by Yankee Candle is nice. I also like lavender. Puts me to sleep.

Magdalene's avatar

I love lavender and jasmine..Gosh! It gives a feeling of heaven

As of now, I really like Persian Rose scented candles.
I’m still looking for a link the scent. ;-)
