How can I find out exactly what my insurance policy covers?

Asked by deni (23141points) May 16th, 2011

I have health insurance through my dad. As of lately I’ve been trying, by rummaging around the Blue Cross Blue Shield website, to find out exactly what I can have done that insurance will pay for. For example, I broke my foot last summer, and am currently having knee and back pain (mild, but annoying) that I think are due to me walking weird because of my foot still being funky. Like, the lady I talked to at the chiropractors office asked if I had chiropractic insurance…and though I was almost positive I did (and I did), I had no idea how to find that out. At the same time I’ve heard people say that some insurance policies will actually cover massages and stuff….but how do I find out if mine does, or, just simply what it covers? You’d think there would be a portion of the BCBS website that just TELLS you what is covered, or what percent is covered, etc, but I can’t find it. Help?

Oh…I thought this was about car insurance, but now I don’t have an answer lol. Sorry.

I would assume you would have to call around to a bunch of different places, finding out which insurance they take, and then verifying that with your insurance company.

I think your best bet is to get a copy of the actual policy, the written hard copy, your father probably has it because he would have received a big packet of paperwork and information when the policy was issued, to find out what your particular policy covers and doesn’t cover. Blue Cross/Blue Shield, any insurance company writes a variety of policies both group and individual and what is covered, the deductibles, etc. can very greatly depending on the policy so they probably won’t have all the specifics on the website. I would ask your father for the information he got when the insurance was issued. That will clearly spell out what is and isn’t covered, the deductibles, co-pays, etc. for the policy

Like @lillycoyote suggests, you need to ask your dad… it’s his policy and he knows how to get the details.

Oftentimes, the folks at the front desk of your doctor’s office can call up the insurance company themselves (via phone or computer) and answer those kinds of questions, too… at least as far as your coverage relates to the services they can provide themselves.

Getting a copy of the policy would be one of the best ways. You can try to call the insurance company yourself to see if they can send a copy to you, but your dad may have to request it. If there is something specific you want to ask about, you can call the insurance company and ask them directly.

Blue Cross covers several million people with several million different policies. Contact your dad and ask him to mail you a copy of your healthcare benefits with Blue Cross. Going online will only confuse you. jp

A copy of the policy would help, but I don’t know what they have to disclose in CO. Typically, chiropractic and accupuncture treatments aren’t covered unless you have that on your policy as a rider, that is, an additional coverage you pay a charge for.

@Adirondackwannabe, my company also uses BCBS and does include coverage for chiropractic and accupuncture treatments with a copay.

@deni really needs to get that info from the policy holder himself, @deni‘s father.
