Has anyone had any experience using the supplement called ganoderma?

Asked by SABOTEUR (14377points) May 16th, 2011

It’s a chinese medicinal product made from mushrooms that’s supposed to be good at aiding the body in resisting cancer, among other things.

This was recommended to me recently; I’m thinking it might help my wife resist the negative effects of chemotherapy.

There is no evidence to show that ganoderma will help resist cancer. I’m sorry about your wife’s condition.

Yeah…I asked if anyone had any personal experience with it because there’s no evidence to back up any medicinal claims.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and for the kind words.

Unfortunately Fluther isn’t the best place to ask a question like this because most of the members tend to vilify alternative medicine and lean toward traditional medicine. However, considering the devastating side effects of chemo, it’s sure worth a try.

It might be worth your while to contact a chinese medical doctor and you can ask your questions directly. PM me if you need help finding one close to you.

@snowberry Exactly how was I vilifying it? All I said was that there was no evidence. Before I answered I went to to evidenced based medicine resources and looked it up.

@SABOTEUR Go to a Chinese medical doctor if you wish. Please, though, do not eschew medically proven therapies for remedies that have not been shown to have any efficacy.

@snowberry Excellent advice concerning seeking a Chinese medical doctor. And we’re not going to abandon “medically proven therapies” despite the debillitating effects of chemotherapy. ___damn, that has to be a remedy from hell!

@Rarebear I received your admonition in the spirit with which it was given. If I recall correctly, I thanked you for it. I thank you again. ‘nuff said.

@SABOTEUR I wasn’t admonishing you. I was answering your question. I was admonishing @snowberry for saying that I did something that I did not do (i.e. vilify alternative medicine).

@Rarebear It’s happened on other alt med questions. Apparently it’s all due to the placebo effect (and if I recall correctly, we had this same conversation on that thread too). So even though I have had 20 years of excellent results using various alternative remedies, it’s all placebo. Wow. I wish that placebo effect worked on all the thousands of $ I have spent on medical procedures and prescriptions that didn’t work! I’d rather spend my money on an alternative remedy that I know works (even if you do say it’s due to a placebo), than on another stupid prescription or medical procedure that doesn’t!

Anyway, if the shoe fits…

@snowberry Please show me where I “vilified” alternative medicine. My standard practice is to look up an answer on my evidenced based medicine sites and then give an informed response. If there is good evidence to show that something actually works, then I have no problem supporting it.

I could listen to people who “know better” than me because of all the “evidence” they can show why something works or doesn’t work, even though the solutions they offer often give me inferior results. Or I could do the more rational action, and do what works.

I believe in using western medicine when I need to, but in many cases, I have found alternative remedies to be better than what my family doctor can offer. It’s either cheaper, more effective, or sometimes both. And sometimes my doctor’s solution is the right one. So I’m not throwing out the baby with the bathwater…

As far as finding the question, I spoke too soon. Now that I look at it, I notice you were not even a participant. Please accept my apology. Anyway, here’s the thread. http://www.fluther.com/118769/have-any-of-you-ever-tried-rescue-remedy-drops-and-do/

@snowberry I accept your apology.

@Rarebear Sorry…“admonish” wasn’t the right word. I understand that you were warning me to beware of quakery. I should have chosen my words more carefully. Thanks again.

@SABOTEUR No problem. My thoughts are with your family.
