What is the most extreme diet you ever heard of?

Asked by cscairns (16points) May 19th, 2011

I need to lose weight quickly, I was wondering if any of you ever did anything unusual to lose weight that is not in the mainstream. Please don’t say “eat less, exercise more” or “eat fruits and vegetables” I have heard that ad nauseum. Looking for something much more drastic.

The more extreme the diet the more dangerous it may be. Is this something you want to do?

Death will take off the pounds pretty quickly, as will anorexia. Neither is particularly healthy, however. The truth is that it is rather difficult to lose weight quickly. The fastest way is exactly what you don’t want to hear: an aggressive exercise plan paired with a stringent diet. All of the fads and non-mainstream alternatives are actually slower. Their advantage, if you can call it that, is the avoidance of doing anything that’s actually good for you in the long term.

I think @FutureMemory is right – if you’re not prepared to exercise more and eat less, or eat more healthily, then surgery is your only alternative.

Wow. Guess what! Diets don’t work. It’s “eat less, exercise more” or surgery, and even with surgery, you follow a carefully prescribed diet. You’ve heard it ad nauseum because it’s the only thing that works.

According to my tastes when it comes to food, the most extreme diet I’ve heard of is the Atkins diet. My brother lost weight on it pretty darn quickly, but it’s not my cup of tea. I can not feel satisfied without eating carbs. Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, mmmmmmmmm. I also don’t think it’s terribly healthy to cut all carbs out of your diet…

I’ll tell you a way to lose weight rapidly, and you don’t have to change your diet or anything. BUT… it tastes nasty:

Drink a shotglass full of Bragg’s Raw, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (once in the morning and once at night, every day)
You can chase it with whatever you want, even Dr Pepper, to get rid of the aftertaste

You WILL lose weight doing that, but it’s terribly smelly and foul tasting and after the first two weeks, I started gagging and throwing up the vinegar anyway.

@syz depends on your definition of diet, but if you mean what i think you mean then i agree.

@WillWorkForChocolate The Atkins’s diet as extreme, really? Compared to, say, a harsh cleanse where you simultaneously poison and starve yourself? I don’t much like it for a variety of reasons, but I’d hesitate to call it ‘extreme’.

@cscairns May i ask why you need to lose weight fast? That may affect the answer.

I hope you plan for short-term results and long term consequences. Any pounds you lose through any drastic diet are mostly water and your body will retaliate by putting on more pounds than you started with if it finds itself in starvation mode which is what any drastic diet does.

@BhacSsylan I said Atkin’s was extreme for ME according to MY tastes. I realize that it’s not extreme for everyone.

Atkinsons, veganism
Monks’ diets are pretty harsh, depending on the order.

@WillWorkForChocolate Ah, so you did. My apologies for missing that.

find something you can’t do, that you want to do and try to do it

I believe Christian Bale lose 28kg in a month or so, by drinking only tea and eating apples. But diets are not a good way to go. It will affect you’re metabolism, and other things, which is not good.

I don’t know if the “U.S. Ski Team Diet” is still around, but it was very effective. It has specific menus that are very repetitive. You aren’t hungry, but you lose your appetite. And you lose weight.
