What are the best dress shoes for your feet?

Asked by johnny (335points) May 19th, 2011 from iPhone

Right now I am wearing dr. Martens. They are super heavy and my heels are killing
me. I just got this new job where I have to dress nice and these were the only shoes I had. Can any of you suggest a comfortable stylish shoe? STYLISH is a big wish. I don’t want some clunky shoe. Nor do i want something too dainty either. Help!

I personally like men’s dress shoes by Steve Madden. They’re stylish, comfortable, and quite affordable. Not too heavy, and certainly not flimsy. My favorites are “Bigg” and “Bannir Dress Boot”.

I love merrells, they are great for the feet and they have all sorts of styles now a days that are cute sandals, however they are usually flats which tend to be better for the feet.

Just wear some nice black flats with some kind of designs on them.

I would go with @MRSHINYSHOES suggestions for work shoes. He is, after all, Mr. Shiny Shoes. Or you might want to look at Rockport’s Dressport shoes if your job requres you to be on your feet a lot.

You might want to think about buying two pairs of shoes for work, instead of one pair. They will last a lot longer, and you will not have to shine them as often. Wearing one pair, you will probably have to shine them once every two weeks to keep them looking nice.

I had a female coworker who used to rave about her Clarks shoes. We worked retail, so were standing and walking all day, and she said that her Clarks were awesome and kept her feet happy, even in the 7th month of pregnancy! The shoes are a little too expensive for me personally, but they might do you nicely.

I second @BarnacleBill‘s suggestion of Rockports….go to any trade show and 99% of the men standing in the booth are wearing them.

I am an official shoe hog.
My Bally’s are incredible dress shoes.
I do have Bruno Magli, Johnston &Murphy, Cole Haan, rockports, Timberlands, Bostonians, and they all serve various purpose.
All from a guy who loves to go barefoot.

@johnny What I find dislikable about most men’s dress shoes on the market is that they’re usually “chunky” and “clumsy” looking, lacking style and class. I don’t like shoes with thick, hard soles, or shoes that have no definable “shape”. I know what you mean by the “heaviness” of Doc Martens.

For me, the best men’s dress shoes are made of good quality leather that is not overly thick and hard, and are light enough to wear all day long without making your feet sore. Slip-on leather dress shoes with a light sole (preferably leather) are really comfortable, especially if you can find a pair that fits nicely. They should be able to “bend” as you take each step (i.e., be flexible enough to walk in comfortably).

My very favorite pair of men’s leather dress shoes is by Tansmith, though Steve Madden makes great shoes overall.

Go find the nearest Nordstrom Rack store and try on every shoe that looks remotely interesting to you. You’ll get a feel for which brands fit your feet more comfortably, everybody’s feet are shaped a bit different so you can’t tell just by looking. Calvin Klein makes some nice looking dress shoes and also Cole Haan and Bruno Magli. Kenneth Cole Reaction has some more trendy looks but at a competitive prices.

We get all my fiancee’s shoes there because he’s a sales manager, always has to look nice and spiffy like he doesn’t really work but he does work horrendous hours on his feet and needs real support and comfort. We haven’t bought a pair of shoes yet that end up in the back closet but he tries them on in the store, both shoes and walks around the aisle then we decide which look the best from the ones that feel right.
