Is black semi-permanent hair dye hard to remove?

Asked by chicklit (215points) May 22nd, 2011

I know that it’s semi-permanent and can wash out (duh), but is it hard to remove completely? I have purple in my hair and I have to dye it to a more natural hair color for my new job. I don’t want to get rid of my purple altogether, and because this is only a summer job, I thought semi-permanent dye would be a better option.

If I use it to cover up my purple, will it completely wash out eventually, or will I have to rebleach it? I am only asking because I used to have blue before and it wouldn’t come off all the way, so I had to use hair bleach.

I had to dye my hair black for the musical “The King and I” this past winter, and I used a semi-permanent dye. My hair is still darker than my natural color. It’s been a few months. The color fades depending on how often you wash it.

It will wash out over time. I use Natural Intincts semi permanent frequently. I have always felt it washed out completely, but maybe it would be less noticeable on my hair than on a color like purple, because I am usually going one shade of brown to another, although I have used temp red, and that washed out completely. Your purple also will fade overtime, and your hair will grow and your roots will be natural over time. So, with time you would want to redo the purple anyway I would think.

A reminder hair dye usually looks darker and harsher on your hair than the color on the box. You say you want black, if you really want black black, then ok, but if you are considering a very dark brown, go a little lighter than you think you want is my advice.

I hear only red is hard to remove even in the semi permanent stage. I’ve had black dyed hair before and haven’t had a problem with it.

Semi-permanent doesn’t really work that way, where it eventually washes out and shows perfectly what you had dyed underneath. Even if it did, the dyes that purple and blue (and green and pink and orange) come in aren’t really good dyes, and would look like shit at the end of the summer. You really need to just dye your hair what you need it for the summer, and then dye purple again when you need to.

I’ve seen blondes and redheads dye their hair with semi permanent hair color and after 3–4 washes it almost looks grey .. Maybe dark brown would work better

It will wash out over time. If you’re looking for a quick way to get rid of it though, I’ve found that this is great for reverting back to your natural color.
