Feedback on Restaurants at SF and San Diego and using coupons to dine in these Restaurants?

Asked by Velvetinenut (1372points) May 25th, 2011

I’ll be going to San Francisco and San Diego and would like to try out the eateries there. Of course, I’d like to use coupons to help with our budget. Restaurant.com showed quite a number of places and I would like to know if they are highly recommended or pricey. If you could check out the non-Chinese/Japanese restaurants and share your opinion, I’d appreciate it. Sorry that I can’t type all the places I want to try. It’ll fill up a lot of space. If you have any place to recommend that is not in my list, please feel free to. Not very into sandwiches… Thanks.

These places caught my eye:

San Francisco

Roosevelt Tamale Bar (Mission)
Cava22 (Mission)
Haltun Mayan Cuisine (Mission)
Chan Chan Cafe Cubano (Castro and Noe)
Santorini (Downtown SF)
Palio d’asti (DSF)
Marrakech (DSF)
Colibri Mexican Bistro (DSF)
Casa Hookah (Richmond)
Villa d’ Este

Marrakech is worth a visit, especially if you haven’t had Moroccan food, which is wonderful. The whole eating experience makes it even more special. I won’t describe it because it would spoil the surprise, but it’s unique and very pleasant. It involves eating with your fingers, in case that’s a problem for you.

I don’t see any places on your list in San Diego; were there any in particular that you wanted feedback on?

I don’t know about coupons, but, the 94th Aero Squadron in S.D. used to be a fav. of mine.
Great champagne brunches on the runway of the old airport.

@ sunny2: Thanks. Nope, not a problem.

@ crisw: sorry, posted this question when it was late for me.

San Diego

Greystone the Steakhouse
The Greek Place
Butcher Club Steakhouse (owned by International Aeros Club)

Coloma: hope to check it out.

Greystone- I have been there once for a work function (not the best place for a vegetarian! It’s very expensive; one of the most expensive restaurants in San Diego. I was there a long time ago and tthe food and service were exceptionally good; the current Yelp reviews are mixed. It’s right downtown, so parking is a big issue unless you’re staying downtown

The Greek Place- never heard of this one and can’t find it with a Google search; what city is it in? We do have the Greek Palace in Kearny Mesa- did you mean that restaurant? My husband eats there a lot as it’s around the corner from his work. It’s not in a scenic part of town; there’s nothing of interest nearby. It’s your basic Greek food; prices are on the high end.

Butcher Club Steakhouse- can’t find this one either. There’s a Butcher Shop steakhouse in Kearny Mesa (a stone’s throw from the Greek Palace above); could that be it?. I’ve never eaten there; it’s a pretty-run-down building and, as I mentioned above, a boring area.

Oh—where in San Diego are you staying? Let me know and I can suggest nearby restaurants. Do you have any favorite cuisines? Anything to avoid other than Chinese/Japanese (how about Thai, or Vietnamese?)

@Coloma

94th Aero Squadron is also in Kearny Mesa (the San Diego restaurant scene really isn’t in KM, despite my posts)! It’s still there. It is still quite the experience, but you go more for the experience than the food :>) On the other side of the same small airport (Montgomery Field) is Casa Machado, a Mexican restaurant, if you’d rather sip margaritas and watch planes :>)

@crisw: you are a star! Thank you so much. Did I mention I was working late the night before? Well, same thing happened when I typed the list for SD. You are spot on with the two places : Butcher Shop and Greek Palace.

Gee, high end huh. Gotta ask my friends if they want to try the places. With the coupons, it doesn’t seem so bad. BUT, any street food place to recommend? Hole in the walls? Want to try Tin Fish! Fish Tacos!!

Thai and Vietnamese are fine. I have Chinese food almost every week so that’s why we are skipping that fare. O.D.ed on Japanese food…

Ummm…. we don’t know where we will be staying in SD. The accommodation is being booked by a friend of a friend. Will definitely post it up when I know where.

Glad to be helpful!

Tin Fish is a franchise, and there are several. The one in Liberty Station (Joao’s Tin Fish) is nice and has a pretty view. The one on the Imperial Beach pier is not so good. The one downtown is incredibly crowded and noisy. That said, I wouldn’t recommend them if you are looking for fish tacos (I don’t eat fish myself, but I do eat shrimp and the two are similar). if you are looking for authentic fish/shrimp tacos, the two best places in town are TJ Oyster Bar in Bonita and La Playita in Clairemont. For somewhat less authentic, more expensive and plentiful, there’s the Rubio’s chain. And, if you plan on visiting Mexico, you can get the real thing with about an hour’s drive down to the Ensenada fish market. If you want some recommendations for Mexican seafood other than tacos, you’ll have to go a bit further afield to Chula Vista; let me know if that is not too far.

There are dozens and dozens of Thai, Vietnamese, Korean etc. restaurants on Convoy Street in Clairemont Mesa. My favorite Vietnamese restaurat is Phoung Trang, for Vietnamese sandwiches and snacks it’s K Sandwiches. (which is a few blocks from Convoy) but pretty much you can’t go wrong just driving down Convoy and picking a restaurant that looks good. Convoy also has some fascinating shops nearby- a Japanese version of a 99 cent store, authentic Korean groceries, etc. For authentic Thai food, the best is Sab E Lee, which has two locations- the one in Linda Vista is more central but the one in Santee is bigger.

Oh, and for a real hole in the wall for your tacos, you can’t beat Mariscos German! Served out of a taco truck parked in a dirt lot next to a liquor store…but oh, are they good!

@crisw: I’m back! Thanks so much for all the advice. The only place I came close was Rubio’s at a very large shopping complex behind Town & Country in Fashion Valley. I didn’t have time to spare to queue up.

I didn’t have much internet connection while in San Diego so I couldn’t post where we were.

In San Francisco, We went to the House of Prime Ribs. Man! The service and food was so good! Had Cioppino at Fisherman’s Wharf. Desserts at Cold Stone. Yum.

In LA, we went to El Torito. Taco Tuesdays!! Had my first Margarita. Famous Dave’s was interesting and good. A lot of food.

Good news is that I think there are plans for a return trip next year. ; D
