What's your reaction to Jim Tressel resigning at Ohio State?

Asked by josie (30934points) May 30th, 2011

I’ll get it started.
I am a Buckeye fan. Tressel has been a good coach. It’s all sort of sad. It has the makings of tragedy. I will miss him.

Of course, he needed to go. He clearly not only broke protocol with the NCAA, but he openly lied in communications with the organization. People who know him say that he did it to protect some of his (obviously) dumb players. This has been his history, to feel parental towards young men who seem to be the most clueless and futureless. In some contexts, this would be virtuous.
But not to the extent that one ignores and even disrespects a very powerful NCAA.
At that point, one gets fired or resigns.

Having said that I am becoming increasingly disouraged and disgusted by the amoral, corrupt, and narcissistic young athletes who are showing up in increasing numbers to play sports in universities, but who otherwise contribute little, and who so carelessly disrupt and complicate the lives of coaches, athletic directors, presidents, trustees and directors, not to mention taxpayers as regards OSU.

I sort of hope the interim coach has the good sense, or the balls, to tell the mildly brain dead athletes, who are at the heart of this sad story, to seek their futures elsewhere. It’s fun to watch a winner on the field or the court. But not so fun that it is worth making a Faustian deal with a bunch of creepazoids and goons.

I disagree @josie. I think it is time for the double standard to stop. The colleges and universities are making money off the backs of these young men, and they are getting nothing.

That’s not right. I think it is the NCAA system that has to change.

Too bad Fluther isn’t more sports oriented. It’s a shame that a question like this is ignored.

I feel bad for Tressel as well. He had a bad group of guys that really took advantage of his trust. I also think that at the time he hear about all this for the first time, he didn’t think it was THAT big of a deal because I’m sure crazier things happen all the time within big college football programs.

It can be argued that these athletes should be paid in some way, because, let’s be honest, it’s a little unfair that they sell all those jerseys with their numbers on it and they see none of it. Having said that, the NCAA has rules, and you have to follow them. It doesn’t seem that hard to follow them either. It comes down to the athletes feeling entitled and above the law for whatever reason. And unfortunately Tressel had to take the fall
