What are you favorite retro and doo wop hits?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) May 30th, 2011

I have always loved old school rock and roll and doo wop, and I have been broadening my horizons lately and listening to more and more music of this variety. Everything from Marty Robbins to Roy Orbison to the Marcels and the Ronettes is fair game to me.

So tell me, Fluther, what are your favorite retro hits of the doo wop, early rock, or even country or swing variety? Links are always appreciated.

Probably “Come Go With Me” by the Del-Vikings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oSR-lT-PEw I heard my friend’s acapella group sing it and I found this version on YouTube and it’s my favorite so far, though obviously it’s not the original. :P

And of course there’s also “31 Flavors” by The Shirelles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO5gKgjzsFw (also one of my favorite movies…)

I’m pretty much drawn to any song that has the so-called “50s Progression” of I-vi-IV-V or I-vi-ii-V

Ugh. I can’t possibly pick a short enough list to actually put here. The true “hits” are always good, though. Doo-wop is one of the only genres of music that has stayed near the top of my list for my entire life. Never gets old.

Just for the record, this song instantly got stuck in my head when I read the question. So I guess that’s my suggestion.

I decided to make it easy on everyone reading this thread and just PM you my whole playlist.

Another? The Sea of Love by Phil Phillips.

All time favorite. If I Didn’t Care by The Inkspots.

Pretty much anything by Dion and the Belmonts.

I had to perform an entire Doo Wop show in high school and the genre has stayed pretty close to my heart since then.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard You need to get your mitts on a Phonograph and some 78s.

I love listening to the song “What a Wonderful World”. It seems to put me in a better mood, no matter when I hear it.

Image of a Girl, by the Safaris.

Angel Baby, by Rosie and the Originals.

I like Angel Baby, but I wasn’t going to include it until read the following comment about the video:

“This song always brings tears to my eyes. In the summer of 1963 I was seeing a beautiful redhead named Vera. We would dance to this song and she’d sing it to me in my ear. She sounded just like Rosie.

She died the day after Christmas in 1963 at the age of 17. I’ll never forget that beautiful girl.”

I especially like the cover version that Joey Ramone did too.

“Pretty much anything by Dion and the Belmonts.”

If you ever upload you doing Sometimes I Wonder Why, please let me know.

@Brian1946 Wanna know something funny? I can do the BASS part on that song. I felt a bit accomplished doing it.

@queenie, thanks, I have never heard that one!

@filmfann haha, I had that one on repeat as I worked on my nesting dolls

@DominicX I agree about that chord progression. It’s just so damn catchy and nostalgic. I love Come Go with Me, by the way.

@KatetheGreat and @Brian1946 I’ve been listening to Dion like crazy lately. I love Lonely Teenager and I Wonder Why. I put those two songs on a retro themed mix cd for one of my friends who is away recently, actually.

@Jude I’ve had one since 2006 :D

@Only138 I do like that one :)

@tranquilsea sweet, those are great, thank you!

@ANef_is_Enuf thank you, and thanks for the link to your playlist!

@filmfann and @queenie thank you guys!

@noelleptc and @Imadethisupwithnoforethought and thank you guys as well!

Wow, this question exploded. Thanks guys!

Sixty Minute Man is hilarious.

Sun Records has a few CDs out (iTunes, etc) with old school rock & roll.

I think it’s safe to say that these people knew what they were doing! ;)

This was playing in a convience store I was in with the volume down real low. But those tambourines pop out, I realized I was hearing something I knew so I walked over to the speaker… and smiled.

That happens to me a lot, I’ve noticed.

Vashti Bunyan. She’s pretty awesome. I’d recommend Train Song and Pink Sugar Elephants. They both sound really similar, but still good.

I had never heard of this chick before, but I really like her. Thanks for sharing!

8Convulsions's avatar

No problem. I’m glad you like her. :)
It’s not exactly what you’re asking for, but you should check out Russian Red too. She’s one of my favorites. She has an adorable voice. She also managed to do a surprisingly depressing, but good, cover of Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Haha.

TexasDude's avatar

Whoa, I really like her… she reminds me of Bjork back when Bjork was in the Sugarcubes. I dig it. She’s beautiful too. I want to marry her.
