Any short story/poetry suggestions to go with "1984"?

Asked by BraveWarrior (1330points) May 31st, 2011

Any suggestions for a 20th century short story (no more than 3 pages) or poem that would go well for a 9th grade English class that is studying George Orwell’s book “1984”?
Thanks very much for your time!

How about Yeats’ “The Center Cannot Hold” ?

Rainer Maria Rilke’s The Panther comes to mind…....

“His vision, from the constantly passing bars,
has grown so weary that it cannot hold
anything else. It seems to him there are
a thousand bars; and behind the bars, no world.”

@zenvelo Thank you, they’ve already done Yeats.
@mazingerz88 Thank you but Blake is 19th century and this must be 20th century. @flutherother Thank you, “The Panther” looks like a very good suggestion!
Would love other suggestions, especially any written around the same time as or closely after “1984” (1948–1950’s).

No review of this sort would be complete without the 1984 introduction of the Apple Macintosh commercial.

I would check out Harrison Bergeron. I think that it would be perfect to go alongside with 1984. :)

George Bush’s speech after the “9/11” attacks, the one where he promised to protect our way of life by declaring war on the word “terror”, while at the same time introducing the Patriot Act and Homeland Security…
