A good ending for my history essay?

Asked by kittykat219 (136points) June 1st, 2011

Hi
I have just finished writing an essay over the ancient Greek civilization. It’s about how its geography helped it to change from small isolated city-states to a large civilization that it is today. I talked about the seas and the mountains etc.. and how the Greeks were protected and how they got trade… but I have no idea how to end it! :/ Do you have any ideas?

History generally ends in the present.

I’d end it, therefore, with a “To Be Continued….” ;-)

But seriously…why not end it in the present. Reference democracy.

I had the same thought as @iamthemob. Close with a reference to all of things that the flourishing Greek civilization left as a legacy for us today.

From this civilization, hit on and explain another asset is Greek food.

Should give you a very interesting finale. john

In the beginning of your essay, you should have a thesis statement that tells the reader what you are going to do in your essay—what you are going to talk about and what you are going to argue. Then, in your conclusion, you can basically restate that thesis, this time using the past tense, telling the reader what you have done. Does that make sense?

It ends when Greece was defeated by Rome, but the influence of Greek culture continued through Roman times and up to the present day. You should mention this in your essay even if only briefly.

I agree with @flutherother: end by mentioning how ancient Greece gave way to Rome, but in the current day we still look to classical Greece with admiration and their culture continues to play a part in ours.

I would emphasize how Macedonia was able to overpower the rest of Greece and spread its culture to Egypt.

First of all, you need to stick to the organization and contents of your essay’s outline in terms of introduction, body (2 or 3 aspects with respective support), and conclusion.
If you didn’t make an outline before you wrote your essay, you can still generate one and adapt the contents of your essay to fit the outline (adding and/or deleting info).
In a concluding paragraph you can: restate your introduction, summarize the body, or present the outcome of the information that you presented.
How about:
1. Summarize how Greece’s geography impacted the ancient Greek civilization in terms of protection and trade.
2. Speculate about the changes in trade based on hypothetical different geographical conditions.
3. Mention how trade is different now in Modern Greece compared to Ancient G.
4. Mention the legacy of Greece’s trade in Western Civilization.
