Are my breasts leaking milk at 25 weeks pregnant?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) June 1st, 2011 from iPhone

Today while getting undressed I noticed small spots in my bra where my nipples rest. It was a black bra so the spots were easy to see. I never felt anything leaking. I’m only 25 weeks along. Am I leaking milk already? Is this normal?

It’s totally normal. I started at 12 weeks. Some people start real early and some don’t even start until after the baby is born.

It is probably milk or pre-milk. It is normal.

Yes. Well technically it’s colostrum (which is what your body makes before your milk comes in). Once the baby is born, you body will actually make your breast milk.

Are you doing anything to prepare your nipples for breastfeeding? I don’t know what is recommended these days, but back when Noah was a boy (feels that long ago today) we were always counselled to start rubbing wool fat into our nipples. I am sure there is something much nicer to use now but I don’t think it is a bad idea. Just as your body is preparing you for when the baby comes, perhaps you can do your bit. Your nipples can become exceedingly sore in those first few weeks whilst you get used to feeding (if you plan to breastfeed of course).

You could buy some of those breast pads to pop into your bra to save it from staining. Look in the baby section at supermarket or pharmacy.

@Bellatrix, yes, lanolin (100% pure) is still recommended prior to the birth & after to prevent cracking. When you get the pads that @Stinley mentioned, @ItalianPrincess1217, in the same area of the drugstore they should sell lanolin nipple ointment.

It’s expensive…but a tiny bit goes a looooooooooong way. Since it’s safe, you can use it on the baby should he get any scratches in the first months. My son needed it put on his “sucking” thumb a few times when he got chapped.
