Should Lady Gaga watch her carb intake?

Asked by josie (30934points) June 5th, 2011

I admit it. I am a fan of Lady Gaga. So shoot me. (On second thought, you won’t be successful, so criticize me instead)
Anyway, I enthusiastically watched the piece about her on 60 Minutes tonight.
It was great. She is very talented, and has a real understanding of her “market”. Good for her.
But…
In one of the segments, she was not wearing much in the way of clothes.
I could not help but notice that she is starting to pack alot of extra junk in her thighs and butt. And she is only 25.
I AM NOT SAYING that I like Lady Gaga for any other reason than her musical/entertainment talent and savvy.
I do not. After all, the chick is almost young enough to be my daughter (well maybe my niece).
But seriously, if I could advise her, I would tell her to be careful about the other stuff.
If you were her manager, would you discuss this with her?

I sincerely hope you’re joking.

josie's avatar

@Facade Your sincerity is compelling. What are you talking about?

I have to say, this question enrages me to the point where I have nothing to say—merely because I cannot even figure out WHERE TO START.

Berserker's avatar

That’s her business, and nobody else’s.

Ugh. I can’t even type a coherent answer because I’m so frustrated with this question. I have written and deleted 3 responses already.

I’m sure your primary concern is her health.~
Watch your own plate. If she is content with her body, then more power to her.
If I were her manager, would I discuss it with her? No. If I were her friend or her mother or her sister, I still wouldn’t. Society’s tendency to push women to fit into a mold is sickening, and I’m one of those people that doesn’t think it should be encouraged.

Also, excess fat on the hips and thighs has been shown to improve women’s health.

Facade's avatar

@josie I’m talking about how you feel you can judge Lady Gaga’s body, let alone any woman’s. Every healthy woman has hips, ass, and thighs, and most of us also have cellulite. “Questions” and comments such as yours are what fuel self-hatred in women. Great job.

Frankly, I think she’s pretty hot, I even went to one of her concerts (with my grand-daughter. The only thing about her that disturbs me is the shoulder prosthesis she used for awhile. It made her look like she had gigantic zits on her shoulders.

As for her weight, I like a girl that has some bulk to her and find these big headed starving run-way models disturbing. If you are over 13 and wear a size 0 dress, you need a sandwich, not a diet.

@Facade Why so serious?

60 minutes is on here on the West Coast, she looks beautifully in shape to me! Besides, this is old footage from last year, did you see how gorgeous she was on Letterman a couple weeks ago?

Given her dancing, that’s not “junk”, that’s muscle.

Cruiser's avatar

Smoking pot and slamming back the whiskey will catch up with you sooner or later and the older she gets the bigger impact sloppy living will have on you.

obvek's avatar

Her ass is her best feature and her music is boring, but that’s just me.

jonsblond's avatar

As long as she leaves enough baby food on the shelves for, um, babies, I don’t care what she eats.

I’m going to go listen to some Cake now.

mazingerz88's avatar

Unless she starts packing it in like Britney before, If I was her manager I would not worry that much yet. But then again, if i’m her manager and I feel she’s on her way out, i’ll probably go for broke and tell her to be like a blob if only for a brief period, just to shock the world and hopefully her songs still come out as hits. And then i’ll tell her to lose weight and then have a baby with Brad Pitt. ( after he splits with AJ ) Or she can have a baby with Angelina, after she leaves Brad for her. How do you like them apples? Lol. : )

Buttonstc's avatar

Ya know what? I’ll bet she’s quite aware of her body and doesn’t give a damn what you or anybody else thinks about it.

Her self esteem was evidently hard won and I seriously doubt she’s willing to trade it in just so she can live up to America’s current obsession with imposing the artificial Barbie image on women in order for them to like themselves.

She’s of Italian descent and they prefer their women voluptous over there. They find the typical skeletal anemic American women pathetic.

Good for her for being true to herself and being a role model for her “little monsters” by encouraging them to accept themselves regardless of which artificial mold society wants to squeeze them into.

Good for her. I wouldn’t tell her to change a thing. Why should she start down the road to anorexia like so many Hollywood women are tempted to do so they can continue to satisfy artificial standards? A little “junk in the trunk” does no harm and some men can appreciate it. Obviously you’re not one of them. But then she wasn’t placed in this world to be governed by your standards, was she?

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

What possible business is it of yours what she eats? Your ego is so large that you think you should have any say in what a complete and total stranger eats, weighs, looks like? How would you like it if she got on here and asked “Should Josie watch his carb intake”?

Bellatrix's avatar

I don’t really care how big her thighs and arse are, I think GaGa is great. She is her own woman and is living her life in her way and who am I or anyone else to judge her based on something as superficial as a bit of extra padding on her body. However, she looks pretty damn hot to me!

Pele's avatar

WTF???? She’s a dancer and she didn’t look like she gained weight at all. What? I’m so confused about this question. She’s a little girl compared to most girls. If she has a little muscle, don’t judge. You got something against a girl with muscle?

Bellatrix's avatar

I am just watching one of her music video clips and if that woman has fat on her, I am damned if I can see it.

jrpowell's avatar

Now you get to post a picture of yourself. I’m expecting to see some rock hard abs.

augustlan's avatar

Were you actually asking this for any reason other than to piss people off? I’m disappointed, @josie. You should know better.

ucme's avatar

She should be careful while crossing her legs, i’m sure her beaver winked at me last time she was on TV ;¬}

Cruiser's avatar

@Bellatrix I saw the same 60 mins piece and the ass I saw sticking out of her short shorts in the interview is not the same ass you see in the vids. Just my observation!

keobooks's avatar

This cracks me up. I picture Lady Gaga arriving on the scene in a giant bubble, opening up the hood and floating to earth with a Kermit the Frog skin hat, her face covered with fabric that looks like it’s on fire, a meat shirt and a thong that makes her look like she may or may not have a penis.

And then she turns around and looks at her butt and say “OMG! I look like a freak! I need to lose some weight!”

Blackberry's avatar

I’m curious to see this, was this the Anderson Cooper interview? Or a new one?

zenvelo's avatar

@Blackberry It was a repeat of the Anderson Cooper interview.

Blackberry's avatar

@zenvelo Oh ok, I saw that one.

I don’t think it is necessarily carb intake, but maybe she is partaking in a little too much partying and fatty foods. I think Lady Gaga is awesome. I like her overall message and I am thrilled for dance music to come back into the vogue, I wish it would push hip hop out. She is starting to show signs of letting herself go a little when close up. I love her costumes, except for the ridiculously high shoes. The shoes are very very upsetting to me. 4+inch shoes in general are very troubling to me. Girls should have their feet on the ground, be able to walk without assitance, not carry a big risk of harming their ankles amd spine just by walking, and be able to run if necessary.

Facade's avatar

@josie So serious because you pissed me off, and also because she looks great =) I hope you never see my thick ass at the beach, you may need to avert your eyes; I love wearing bikinis.

jrpowell's avatar

@Facade :: Don’t worry, not everyone is Josie (thank god). I enjoy a healthy glance at a thick ass in a bikini.

And I’m glad the mods left this. From here on out Josie can be ignored if he actually has a real question.

KatawaGrey's avatar

This is a ridiculous question.

The only carb-watching she should do is when she’s watching it go from her plate to her mouth.

Does anyone else find it funny that @josie was worried that we would criticize his love of Lady Gaga?

Facade's avatar

@KatawaGrey Probably because liking Lady Gaga wouldn’t be very “manly”

obvek's avatar

@KatawaGrey, Yeah, I was wondering if I should bring up the point about skinny runway models being the gay man’s (i.e. designer’s) idealized vision of femininity.

sliceswiththings's avatar

Hellz yeah she should, everyone knows that having the tiniest bit of cellulite paralyzes one’s vocal chords.

Mikewlf337's avatar

I could care less even if she was so fat that she had quadruple chins, butt cheeks that look like two large pillow cases filled with cottage cheese, cankles, and a gut that was so fat that it hung down between her legs and formed a huge roll down the middle and made her look like she had one enormous vagina. I don’t listen to her music and I have maybe heard 5 seconds of 1 song from her. Would I tell her to watch her carbs if I were her manager? No. I could care less if she at a plate full of ding dongs, ho-hos, and twinkies smothered in sausage gravy for every meal. I wouldn’t be her manager in the first place. I don’t like that type of music.

josie's avatar

Take it easy folks.
I bought her new CD (it’s great) and I already acknowledged the talent. You may or may not criticize the fact that I am a fan. I don’t care.
I was simply pointing out what others have already noticed.
http://ladygaga.so-rocks.com/2010/10/18/is-lady-gaga-getting-fat/ among others.
The question was, if you were her manager, would you discuss it with her.
I take it that most of you would not.
Fair enough.

Ron_C's avatar

@josie I checked out the pictures, I would say comfortable, no fat. I now find her even more attractive. Madonna has some kind of body builder body, I would be afraid that she’s hurt me. On the other hand the really young ones like the girl that plays Hanna Montana, needs more years and pounds before she becomes attractive to me.

It all depends on your personal tastes. It is also likely that a person with a few extra pounds will have fewer illnesses and a longer life. Besides what chance do either of us have to talk to any of these celebrities let alone influence their diet?

lonelydragon's avatar

I can’t believe I’m defending Lady Gaga, but she isn’t even close to being fat. The pictures you posted are slightly unflattering, but only because of the poses and outfits she’s wearing. Wearing overly tight clothes creates the appearance of fat even in thin people. Also, very few people look good while squatting as she did in the first photo. As evidenced by the last photo, she can still dance and perform, so I doubt she is unhealthy. I actually think she looks better now. She was verging on too thin before.

To pretty much everyone here -

Many of you are failing to realize that Lady Gaga makes her living as an entertainer. Therefore, she does most of her work in Los Angeles and is considered a celebrity. The question clearly asks should her MANAGER say something. I would say it would be a combination of manager/publicist, but that’s neither here nor there. The answer, unfortunately, is yes. In a place like hollywood, normal rules don’t apply. If you’re going to be in the spotlight, in almost all cases, you’re also going to be critiqued on how you look.

Since Lady Gaga also makes a living marketing HERSELF, she needs her “product” to be a certain way, or else she will inevitably make headlines for the wrong reasons. That would be bad for her “image.”

In Hollywood, the rules or real life don’t really apply to be honest. In most cases, you have to have the total package..talent, looks, appeal…and that’s pretty much “just how it is,” as they say.

This is not meant to be any sort of remark on how women should look. It’s simply an answer to a question in which the context needs to be more closely looked at (i.e. where she lives, what she does for a living)

SIDE NOTE: Since I took Josie’s side on this, I have to say that Lady Gaga isn’t that great. Her music, lyrics etc. are not original. Her “unique look” isn’t that great either. This is just from a casual music listener.

I’d love to see how this question would have turned out if it had been asked about Sarah Palin. I don’t think @josie would have received as much hate if it had. ;)

Ron_C's avatar

@jonsblond I think that Palin is the hottest right wing nut job around and she’s right in my age range. I would, however use protection, either stuff something spongy in her mouth or wear sound proof ear phones.

zenvelo's avatar

Lady Gaga looks pretty hot here .
