A Fluther glitch, why no edit functions for PMs?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) June 5th, 2011

Was it overlooked or a glitch that when you are composing a PM you get no preview to see how it looks and check spelling and such before you post it, and if you post it to discover a typo or something else, you can edit it to fix it. Was that a glitch or an oversight? I know the creators maybe didn’t test drive the whole site or may not have needed to test everything but on top of not being able to edit your interest/tags this another area you can’t edit, what is up with that? Fluther is a very large and very complex web site. Most likely it was built using a Web framework with which the primary developers were familiar.
It’s harder to test a website than you might think. For one thing, the folks who developed it are absolutely unqualified to test it due to assumptions and knowledge that they have which “real users” won’t have. Not every site owner can afford to hire professional software testers to test their site (those folks are expensive.) It’s often easier to let the actual users of the site run into things and complain about them. As long as the site is cool enough that these little “bugs” won’t make them leave, then users are, effectively, free and comprehensive software testers.

Yep. Why hire expensive software testers when willing guinea pigs are free?

I suspect that the ability to PM was added after the site already existed in its original form. As with many things (phones/apps/websites, etc.), add-ons aren’t always as full-featured as the original thing itself is. Improvements to a huge project often come incrementally, and I hope to see preview and edit functions for PMs someday. Since it’s not vitally important to the main function of the site, though, it’s just not at the top of the list.

@augustlan Is there a development blog somewhere, or another place to find out about stuff like this? I’m interested in how projects like this come to life (and who knows- if it’s PHP-based I might even be able to help out!)

@koanhead Here are some of our blog categories that might shed some light. Disclaimer: I haven’t read them all, so I’m not sure they’re all relevant.

How’d they do that?

There might be other helpful categories, too. Go forth and explore! :)

Also, thanks for sending me this question.

@augustlan Many thanks, I will check them out!

@Hypocrisy_Central :: Fluther doesn’t have spell checking, that is a function of your browser. And editing a PM just sounds like it would be abused unless you couldn’t edit it after the recipient read it. And coding that is a huge waste of time.

@koanhead :: This site is Django which is Python.
