Can you identify this plant (picture included)?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) June 8th, 2011

At Price Chopper today I saw a stand of small potted plants for sale. Most of them were African violets, but a few were just foliage plants and were labelled only with the vague description “tropical foliage.” One in particular was very beautiful and I want it, but I don’t know what it is. As I said in this question I asked a few days ago, I need a plant that is hardy and can withstand varying temperatures and sunlight availability. I’m wondering if someone can identify this plant for me so that I can determine if it would live successfully in my dorm room. Thanks!

It honestly looks like a purple tulip on sterroids.

@MyNewtBoobs I really think that might be it, which is great because according to this article they’re pretty easy to keep alive. Thanks!!

@MyNewtBoobs has it right. It looks like a Hawaiian ti plant.

Thanks for confirmation, Jake! So, do you think it will survive in a little pot in a college dorm room in Massachusetts? If the article I linked above is accurate, I think it’ll be fine, except I’m not sure if there’s fluoride in the tap water there.

It should be fine, but I’m not an expert.

Let the water you use to water your plant sit uncovered for a few days. The oxygen will work out of it before you use it. Sometimes people go to water their plant, and the water coming out of the faucet is much colder than the plants’ roots are. Water left to sit like this will be room temperature, the same as the plant.

Hawaiian Ti Plant. I used to have one as a kid. I sent for it by mail, after seeing it advertised in a comic book. It’s supposed to bring you luck. You can buy them by the stems. That’s how I got mine. They sent a piece of the plant, the cane stem, and you just stick it in the moist soil or water, and it leafs out. It’s quite easy to grow.

I should mention that a Hawaiian Ti Plant is a Cordyline. Link

@Mariah Do you know how much sunlight you get in the dorm? I have a basement apartment, so I get very little sunlight, and almost all of it is right by the windows, so I’d love to find a plant other than bamboo that doesn’t really need more than a bit of sunlight.

@MyNewtBoobs It’ll depend which building I get placed in, but my room last fall had a huge window and got quite a bit of sun.
