What software can I use to screencapture on a mac?

Asked by kullervo (785points) June 13th, 2011

I need to record some actions on my screen for a presentation but the software I usually use on PC is not available on Mac/OSX. What is cheap/free and works?

QuickTime covers this if you are using 10.6 or above

Open QuickTime and choose File—> New Screen Recording

It will put a thing in your menu bar on the right to stop recording.

Also, if you’re looking for stills, you can use “Grab”.

You can find it under applications>utilities>grab

There’s a simpler way fot stills:

Command + Shift + 3 [for entire screen]
Command + Shift + 4 [for a reticle that will allow you to select a part of the screen]

Quicktime, as jp described it, is the best software to use without spending money.

@squirbel :: And Command + Shift + 4 + Spacebar will just get a certain window. The window turns blue.

iShowU and ScreenFlow are probably the best overall apps, but they’re somewhat expensive.

I use ScreenFlow but it was a hundred bucks. I had to use it a lot for work so it was worth buying.
