Did anyone hear the Repub debate tonight? What was that noise?! (Details)

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) June 13th, 2011

I tuned into the second hour of the debate (or discussion or whatever it was.) As I was listening, I kept hearing this grunt (I know this sounds funny, but I did) it was this continuous “uh..uh..uh..uh…” or some low grunt and it was incredibly distracting. It almost sounded as if someone was talking in low tones over the responses.

(Okay, I am listening to Anderson Cooper’s after debate show right now and in the replays you can still hear it.)

Did anyone notice this?

I thought it was the moderator trying to interrupt.

Probably crowd noise. Bear in mind that there were groups there with strong support for a given candidate. Most likely when anyone else was talking and ripping their choice, they were whispering in the ears of their allies about how wrong candidate x was to criticize candidate Y in such a way.

On the other hand, it could also be there were enough people in the audience with working memories, able to recognize BS political rhetoric when they hear it, and what you heard was their groans over all the gross inaccuracies, exaggerations, and outfight lies from the stage.

I don’t want to get into the politics of the debate, okay? That’s not what this is about.

Did anyone notice the sound or not? Yes? No?

This was not anyone interrupting, though it sounded like someone was about to do so, then did not…but then I noticed that it was a continual low sound on a cadence over and over and over. So, it could not have been “crowd noise” as it was the same exact sound at the relatively same pace. That’s why it was so strange.

@ETpro….I didn’t want to address the politics..but honestly, BS is not limited to just one party. It’s a bi-partisan issue these days…in spades. That’s not what I want to dwell on or talk about in this question. Thanks.

It was John King trying to stop the candidate from speaking and was very annoying.

Yes, I heard it, as I said above. I know exactly what you are talking about. It was not crowd noise, I agree. There was one point in the speech where the noise was happening andnthen the host did interrupt and it seemed like it was all him, but maybe it was coincidence, and then I kept hearing that noise throughout amd it was very odd.

The video is on YouTube now in 4 parts. Here’s a link to part 2. It’s definitely John King saying “uh” under his breath, probably not thinking it’s going directly into his microphone. It seems to happen every time an answer runs long.

Yes…thank goodness….an answer! I thought I was imagining things.
This morning (before reading these responses) I thought, “It might have been the host…muttering….” What a bleating mutter…it got to the point where I couldn’t concentrate on what the panelists were saying. lol!

It was really distracting. Thanks to all….um um um um um….lurve…um um um is coming to alllllll um um um um….

@DarlingRhadamanthus OK, it’s official. I subscribe to the Human Events daily newsletter, and today’s edition features one of the editors, Jason Materra, complaining about John King’s noises. I hope the web version is viewable for you without sign in. If not, let me know and I will post a screen capture to my website and link to it.

I said it at the very top.

Thanks, again, @JLeslie and @ETpro….They ran blurbs of Michelle Bachman on the ABC/CBS News and the grunting was even on that (when she was describing her stance on TARP.)

Lurve on its way!
