What's a good criminal justice related job for a student?

Asked by livelaughlove21 (15724points) June 17th, 2011

I’m hoping to one day be a probation officer and I’m a college student currently. What type of part time job could I get that is somewhat relavent to criminal justice or law? A job that requires no college education. I’d like an on campus job, but I don’t know if they have the options I’m looking for.

I want to volunteer at our Juvenile Justice Center, but I’ll be a full time student with two part time jobs, so I don’t know when/if I’ll have time. I don’t want to graduate with no relevant experience to my career goals.

I’m a female, so a security guard job isn’t going to happen…

I think a part time security guard would be great. Why do you think being female is an issue?

@PluckyDog If you saw me, you’d know why. If something actually went down while I was on my shift, there’s absolutely nothing threatening about me. It just wouldn’t be a good fit for me.

Maybe I shouldn’t have phrased that line like I did. I’m sure there are plenty of females that could do great as a security guard. I’m not one of them.

Legal assistant – large firms would probably require training or previous experience, but small offices or one attorney might hire you for office help

I interned at a prison for a summer. It wasn’t an actual “get a paycheck” job, but I got 6 college credits and a boatload of experience. That’s one option, because it is something you can put on your resume. See if the local probation office is willing to take on an intern.
Security jobs are still a possibility, even if you believe you aren’t an intimidating person. You probably couldn’t be a bouncer at a club, but sometimes college campuses have “cadet” positions where you just kinda patrol and keep an eye on the campus. I’m currently working on my masters in criminal justice and I write the parking tickets for the university, which is technically a law enforcement job, so you could check something like that out too. Best of luck!
