What do you think of the idea of having a place on Fluther to post personal news?

Asked by janbb (62858points) June 21st, 2011

I have some sad news which I was looking to share with Fluther friends. There is no obvious place to put it; the ongoing “something great” and “progress” threads are not really appropriate places. Would it make sense to have an ongoing thread or a community feed spot where one could share important news or is that not appropriate on a “Q&A” site? Your thoughts?

I think that’s a great idea! I’ve often wanted to, but as you said, sometimes the “something great” and “progress” threads don’t quite fit.

FutureMemory's avatar

I think I like it.

Let’s get it done!

Jude's avatar

I like the idea.

janbb's avatar

I could make it an ongoing thread without any special tweaking needing to be done but let’s see if Auggie has any other suggestions.

chyna's avatar

I like it.

Brian1946's avatar

I eighth that motion.

Such a thread would also provide interesting reading for nosy busybodies like me.

faye's avatar

I like it. I have something to say today.

tinyfaery's avatar

No way. J/k. I just wanted to be original

Something like a personal bulletin board? As long as we have a choice of whether to look at it, so its optional and doesn’t intrude, I like it. It would enhance the sense of community.

I guess I would be in favor of it more if it were just posts than if it were posts plus comments. Comments could be made in PMs.

Jude's avatar

I agree with the comments being made via PMs.

I like it. I feel like I spam the progress thread inappropriately at times when I want to share something personal that isn’t exactly “progress.”

Hope you’re okay in whatever is going on, @janbb.

janbb's avatar

@Jeruba Wasn’t thinking of comments being part of it. Just news to share and pms as desired for follow-up. And I would prefer it not to devolve into FB like posts of “I’m hungry tonight; what should I eat?”.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. It’s better to share it with a group of people (especially with friends and other people who care about you) than to keep it to yourself. I hope all is well and everything works out fine, @janbb.

So my news which is not a big secret and people are asking about is that my Mother-in-law died last night. She had been in worsening shape from kidney failure and dementia for the last six months or so and we knew it was near the end. It is a relief that her suffering is over but still however, the finality is a shock.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

My condolences, @janbb. I am sorry for your loss.

janbb's avatar

Thank you Michael. She was a good mother-in-law to me.

Jude's avatar

So sorry to hear that. My condolences, J.

Aw penguin…I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I too have a great mother-in-law and will be very said the day she passes. I’m so sorry.

Jeruba's avatar

@faye, what’s your news?

faye's avatar

I had a nerve ablation- burning- today and am looking forward to going for walks!! The doctor burned the nerves in my right lower back. Ihave arthritis there and very little cartilage left. Thanks for asking me! Freezing is gone and the area doesn’t hurt much.

Jeruba's avatar

A quick recovery to you. It’ll feel nice to move around again, won’t it?

DarlingRhadamanthus's avatar

@janbb….My deepest condolences, Jan. Even when something is expected it is still no less painful. (Big hugs and prayers.)

@faye….I hope you get to feeling much better soon and up and out enjoying the summer!

_zen_'s avatar

Perhaps a blog?

Bubs – may you know of no further sorrow.

janbb's avatar

Thanks zen and all and @faye hoping for an easy recovery.

I have wished for such a thing. At the same time, it’s fun to figure out how to turn personal stories into a question.

My very first social website I was a member of I had (I still have) my own “blog” page where I could post my daily musings and other members were free to comment. It was a home away from home that is now a ghost town. I miss that luxury dearly.

augustlan's avatar

Firstly, my sympathies to @janbb and wishes for a speedy recovery to @faye.

I like the idea, and would be fine with an ongoing question in the Social Section for the purpose. One catch, though… I really don’t think we’ll be able to prevent people from responding publicly to the news that’s been shared (you can see we all did so here). It’s just human nature I think, and I really doubt people will feel comfortable with a lot of blank space after bad (or good) news. It’s too much like silence, I guess.

An alternative idea I’ve been kicking around for a while is doing something like this on the Fluther blog. About every month or so, we could have a ‘community news’ blog post. Everyone could email or PM me with their news (good or bad), and I’d collect them in between times. Of course, you lose the immediacy with this option.

I’m open to your ideas and suggestions on this, so please feel free to offer them.

downtide's avatar

I like the idea. Maybe something could be added to the profile page that could be updated, and maybe users could subscribe to the “blog” pages of people in their fluther-pool?

Mariah's avatar

@augustlan Am I correct in assuming that all ideas involving technical changes are out?

Personally, I have no trouble with comments on the “news” being posted in the thread, so that sounds like the best option to me.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

My condolences janbb. I’m sorry for your loss. A good MIL is a great thing to have, and worse to lose.

janbb's avatar

I was fortunate to have and know her for many, many years and to have had a good visit with her in December.

I personally like Auggie’s idea of a monthly blog post but am happy to start a thread in Meta if that is the consensus. Agree that people will often want to respond in the thread and they can make it a pm or not as they deem fit.

Poll question now: blog post or thread?

FluffyChicken's avatar

whole new section. you’d have General, social, meta, and statements.

bkcunningham's avatar

Thread. My sincere condolences to you @janbb. My dear mother died after being on dialysis for nearly five years. It is a tough battle. Peace. Best wishes @faye.

Mariah's avatar

My vote is for the thread.

erichw1504's avatar

Thread

I also have some news to share.

janbb's avatar

Well, why don’t I post a thread in Meta and we’ll see how it works?

erichw1504's avatar

Do it, do it noaw!

janbb's avatar

New thread has been started HERE

Jude's avatar

Yay! I hope that it works. And, I hope that people stick with the program, instead of putting up stupid shit.

tinyfaery's avatar

I’m never gonna remember the thread is there and it’s gonna fill up very fast.

janbb's avatar

@tinyfaery Yeah – those are potential problems with this approach. We can switch to the blog idea if this doesn’t work well. Post something on it soon and then it will come up in your activity.

erichw1504's avatar

@janbb & @tinyfaery or just hit the “Follow Question” button.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@erichw1504 : I was gonna say that!
