It's only the 2nd anniversary of his death: Where are all the Michael Jackson tributes?

Asked by drdoombot (8145points) June 25th, 2011

I have five music channels and not a single one of them is running any kind of tribute for our dearly departed Michael Jackson. Both MTV’s, both VH1’s and Fuse are not playing anything MJ-related today. Not the E! network either. Not even one video or retrospective!

Is the nature of the world and media today such that we can forget about someone so influential in less than 2 years? Doesn’t he deserve to be honored for this contributions to music and dance?

BTW, this thread is not the place to bash MJ, nor to discuss his alleged transgressions, deviancy or scandals. If you’re not a MJ fan, that’s cool; just don’t make this the place to let us know that.

Well, death has a way of forgetting everybody. If we had a tribute for every famous person on the date of their death, well, there would be NO regular broadcasts, ever. haha

He’s dead, the tributes have to stop sooner or later. Make your own tribute. ;-)

It is two years after. You will find a host of tributes at five years, 10 years, etc.

The public has such a short attention span. It was surprising at the time, but in hindsight, we should have seen it coming. He was such a legend that a huge tribute was a given when he died, but a lot of people also didn’t accept his innocence in molestation cases, so there is some reluctance in the media. Not everyone wants to see him portrayed as a hero.

I don’t know if he was guilty. I prefer to think not, because I did grow up on his music. As a kid I loved him as a performer and always thought he was misunderstood. But I can see why not everyone wanted to celebrate him.

I had no idea this was the anniversary. I’m shocked it’s not all over everywhere and there.

They are doing Michael Jackson Thriller flash mobs at the San Diego Fair today.

(Can it really be a flash mob if it’s scheduled?)

Vh1 in my country is showing the Top 20 MJ Videos which I’m watching while checking Fluther. I know what you mean about media paying tribute to him, etc., but the fact is he is in the hearts of all his fans…

It does not surprise me that there aren’t any media tributes. If you are in the U.S., I am even less surprised. I agree with @marinelife, most tributes are at intervals.

I have my own personal tribute. The media tends to seek drama, whether true or not, so they can stuff it as far as I’m concerned. I know there are several fan base flash mobs in different parts of the world happening today – and yesterday.

Michael Jackson will always hold a special place in my life. No matter what. For me, the connection is personal ..maybe even a bit spiritual. The man ..the music ..the dance ..will never be forgotten. One of the true “greats” I think.

We’re busy people; we don’t have time to remember every fallen pop star. Especially when we’ve got bills and jobs and school and a crappy economy and a mixed-up government and our own lives to pay attention to.
For the better, I’d say; I only like a couple of his songs.

Every so-called “urban” radio station in NYC has been playing his stuff all day. I know because the local shops have had the radio on.

@Nullo Art is food for the soul, we need to find a balance between reality and the little things that can carry us away even for a minute…I’m never too busy to listen to a nice melody that makes me smile.

Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer who ever lived.

trickface's avatar

He’s the one who did that “Billy Joel” song, right?

Nullo's avatar

@trickface Oh, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t stop and smell the odd rose, I’m saying that there are other things. Left out of my litany (though not intentionally) was the mountain of other entertainments available to us.

I’ve only had my TV on for ten minutes all day, and I happened on one.

Two years is neither here nor there, especially in this case. Had he been a less controversial figure, I’m sure stations would jump all over the (commercial) opportunity.

I also agree with @marinelife – one month, one year, five years etcetera. Two is lost in the shuffle a bit – but it’s mostly becase it’s him – MJ – love him or hate him, you can’t deny the controversy surrounding the (alleged) pedophile affair. Playing his music (which is brilliant) on the radio is one thing; it’s fanbased and a commercial necessity. Tributes to his death is another matter entirely.

Two years isn’t really a good time for tributes (though a local radio station is having a weekend long look at his career).
However, I think one of the Sci Fi channels is playing “It”

Here in the NY Metro area, the black “urban” stations – WBLS and 98.7 Kiss FM all had tributes. The Connecticut station had “your favorite Michael Jackson songs by request” tonight. The oldies station CBS FM had Michael Jackson featured this evening.

You’re probably keying into the wrong media…MTV especially, given they were forced to show Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” during the age when they allowed no Black artists on their network.

I’d bet money that “urban” radio stations throughout the country ran, or are running, some form of tribute today. Magic 95.9 in Baltimore MD has temporarily redesignated itself Jackson 95.9, and has been playing MJ, Jackson 5, and The Jacksons exclusively all day long.

Not hard to imagine there being similar tributes considering the “carbon copy” mentality of what passes for radio programming these days.

It’s the second anniversary. All the hoopla is gone. He was a great artist, but there are more important things than MJ’s death.

SABOTEUR's avatar

@pshizzle True indeed…but there are few artists as talented as Michael Jackson was. No one is forced to honor his memory. Many of us choose to do so because we loved him and appreciate what he contributed to the world with his presence.

By the way…the “hoopla” you mention is merely a public observation. For his fans, honoring Michael Jackson is an ongoing endeavor.

Holy macaroni time flies! I didn’t know it was 2 years. Heck I didn’t even realize it was one year past!
