What are your favorite disaster movies?

Asked by zahava85 (131points) April 28th, 2008

Examples could range from Independence Day to The Towering Inferno. As long as multiple people die, it counts in my book!

matrix 3 was a total disaster. I still want my money back.

How about Blues Brothers? Didn’t really see many people die, but with all those car crashes…....

Is Mad Max too post apocalyptic to count?
There is one great one I saw in the 80’s that I can’t remember the title to. A lot of it took place in a NYC diner and had to do with word spreading quickly about a nuclear threat. The news was supposed to be classified but spread rapidly and the streets became total chaos.

What’s the one with the monkeys…

Outbreak! It was so bad it was good. Or maybe it was just bad. Anyway, it’s entertaining.

I think anything post-apocalyptic definitely counts! 12 Monkeys is another great one..

I love twister and independent day and war of the worlds

OK then, definitely Mad Max, and not to be confused with Road Warrior or Beyond Thunderdome.

Oh, and Red Dawn.

Paycheck is my favorite. On the surface it looks like just an action flick with Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman, but the story really impacts me. The lesson that hits me hardest each time I watch it is that what we anticipate tends to happen. Our expectations are so powerful.

Based on other Fluther activity today, surprised no one’s suggested Loose Change yet.

I liked Independance day. good flick.

Also, Simpsons. The whole down goes down. And that Homer simpson. hehe.

I may be biased however, as my icon would indicate.

I like 28 Days Later, I Am Legend, and The Day After Tomorrow.
Also, does Stephen King’s Storm of the Century count? Cause I like that one, too.

I could watch any disaster movie. Any time. My faves would be turbulence, volcano, Dante’s peak, and armageddon.

Have you all forgotten “The Titanic”? Or is this not popular with group. I know it was a smash at the theaters.

peedub's avatar

I think I just felt some vomit rising in my esophagus.

@ dithibodeaux – that one did tap into one of my fears. Drowning in cold open water. man that freaked me out. All that dark dark deep cold water. Shivers boy.

‘Did anyone else see ‘Earthquake’, in Sensurround ? They had those great big subwoofers in the theatre to make the place vibrate.

@wildflower….The Blues Brothers destroyed more cars than Detroit sold that year….

Well there ya go….

I really liked The Day After Tomorrow, War Of The Worlds, Signs & Cloverfield.

Dante’s peak is pretty crazy. All that raining ash and stubborn Grandma pulling that boat through the lake of acid is badass.
