How can I stabilize a dowel for flight?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) July 4th, 2011

I built an air cannon that takes roughly a ¾” dowel for ammunition. Is there any way I could stabilize it without having to fashion it like a crossbow bolt? I want to get maximum distance possible. What do you recommend for stabilizing?

There are two effective ways to stabilize a projectile; fins or spin. Bolts and arrows use fletching (fins) while most guns use rifling (spin).

You could put a tail on the projectile like you sometimes see on tranquiliser darts. That will generate more drag though.
