General Question

My friend has extremely frizzy, puffy hair, and she wants her hair smooth and straight, how can she fix her hair?

Asked by jdogg (871points) July 5th, 2011 from iPhone

She’s a natural blonde, she said she’s tried everything (I think she’s exaggerating) and she said she doesn’t want to do straight perm because it “fries” her hair. What should we do?

a really good flat iron.

She is tilting at windmills and wasting good energy. Suggest that she embrace her hair and simply use some defrizzing products such as the John Frieda Line.

Eat healthier, use better products without chemicals, and learn to work with what nature gave her.
Anti-frizz products are just filled with plastics that weigh down and coat the hair. It causes a facade if you will…

I’m going to go with @Judi on this one. She needs a really good flat iron. Mine cost almost 200 bucks but it has a lifetime guarantee and it works like magic.

she supposedly flat irons her hair which she says “straightens” it, but still isn’t smooth, if that makes sense.

She either has a cheap flat iron or she puts too much chemical stuff in her hair or both. If she really wants her hair to look nice, she’s going to have to invest some money and time into it.

Have your friend try a chi flat iron. I have really curly frizzy hair and am mixed black and white, and I can use a chi and it makes my hair look like it’s naturally straight and it’s not frizzy. But after she washes her hair she should use a blowdryer and blow out her hair with a brush, then straighten it. No frizzies.

If her hair is not smooth after the iron then it means her actual strands of hair are different than straight people’s hair. If you pluck out a hair from a curly headed person then you will feel it’s flat in spots instead of rounded. You can iron down flat or rounded strands but they will still be flat or rounded strands of hair and so will reflect light different, move differently and feel differently.

Her best bet is to find a cutter and stylist who can work with her over time to find a look that lets her natural hair alone with minimal styling goos, what are called wash n wear styles. The hair can be worked with to be softer to the touch, have nice shine but leaving the strands to do their thing will be necessary.

I also like using Bedhead ” After Party” product. It’s a bit pricey, around $17—$18 but lasts a long time.

My hair is naturally wavy too, not frizzy, but for the sleek effect I need to use a smoothing product and flat iron too.

A steam feature is really helpful also on the flat iron.

I have the Nano Silver by Conair and it has a water reservior for steam.

Works great!

Brazilian straightening treatment.
She’s wrong about how it effects her hair if it’s done by a good stylist.

It’s a real shame that all those with naturally straight, limp hair that wont extreme perms to get their hair full and frizzy can’t just trade hair with people like your friend.
