Who cares?

Asked by Blondesjon (33994points) July 6th, 2011

Is there anything that you really care about or has our super connected, high speed world fed you enough information that you are now a burned out, cynical shell?

And just what exactly is caring? What does the word mean to you?

Caring implies a lot of things to me .. I care for my family so I do ALL THAT I CAN for them .. I car for friends and it’s obvious I’ll do the same .

I care for a lot of things .. some are ranked higher on my caring scale while others get a bottom position .

It depends on what mood I’m in, but I’m usually a burned out cynic. We really can’t do much anyway. Caring is a lot of things. It can be going to a protest, or making a dumb group on facebook for people that are going to turn on their porch lights to honor Caylee Anthony lol.

I care that the super connection stays up ! ;-)

Being super connected has not diminished my caring, and in many ways informs my caring.
I have a cynical side and that gets informed too.

Caring is spending attention and thought on a subject with the most positive ideas in mind and I cherish caring about special beings in my life.

That is why I rarely watch tv.
In fact,I am sure I could live very well without it until the day I die.:)
I will read some news but have limited that to a few trusted sources.I am much happier that way.
As for caring about people? Of course I still do.I don’t like to see innocents suffer.

Yes, I care about all of the people uffering in the wake of disasters after the news cameras leave like in Japan, and in the areas in the US hit by tornadoes.

In my world, caring about your fellow humans is not optional.

I care about a lot of things. (Not really just things, mostly people)
I don’t care about a lot of things, (I don’t care enough to name them).

I care deeply for all of my family, and especially my children. I care deeply for my friends. When they cry, I cry.

I don’t care one bit for anyone who hurts my friends or family, or especially my children. I wouldn’t cry if they got run down by a mack truck. Repeatedly.

I care tremendously for most animals, my plants, my house, my car, and the same items belonging to family and friends. I also care very deeply for a lot of jellies, and I hurt when I know they’re hurting.

I don’t care as much about animals who were bred for the sole purpose of human consumption. Now, if I had a pet cow or a pet chicken, I would care about it.

I think I’m pretty burned out/cynical about most things, unless it’s something that directly affects me, or touches my heart.

I care about a lot of things but over the years have forced myself to calm down and concentrate on my immediate circle of friends/family in order to not feel overwhelmed, helpless, ineffectual, depressed, cynical or pessimistic. Now and then when I get a burr up my bum then I remind myself it’s ok not to be able to see everything, touch everything or try to help everything I’d like to.

I care too much, even when on my antidepressants. I care so much I sometimes have to invoke my cynical side just to function in the world.

jonsblond's avatar

Me. Someone in this family has to care, dammit. =)

Caring is about conscience, in Western terms.

See this web site about kids who care about garbage on beaches for an example of the web actually spreading caring, and possibly to refresh your own sense of human caring.

Of course I care or my heart wouldn’t hurt every time I hear a new cancer patient’s story and feel quite helpless sometimes given the many barriers they’re encountering. I care when I parent my children because I don’t want them to grow up into douchebags who treat others like crap and think the world is made for them. I care when there is no justice for some people, when children are victimized, etc. The more information we’re fed, the more we know of how horrid people can be and the more I care.

I care deeply about the futures my kids’ choose.

I care. Humans are supposed to.

Cruiser's avatar

Caring is what being human is all about but I will never allow another person, news, or politician tell me or force feed me what they think I should care about!

CaptainHarley's avatar

@Cruiser

Well, that just makes good sense! : ))

Luke Skywalker cares. Oh… I wish I had a link.

I really care about a lot of things. However, I don’t care loudly. I’m not going to be screaming or demonstrating to show I care.

I still care about a whole host of things. I don’t think I could ever switch off. I might at times have to pull back because things are making me too emotional, but I always care and I don’t want the day to come when I don’t care.

I like what @Cruiser said and @CaptainHarley said (and what lots of the rest of you said too of course but those comments stood out for me). And I see a lot of students who say they are finding it too confronting to engage with the news media @lucillelucillelucille. You are not alone in your disengagement.

Personally though, I am not disengaged from the media, I feel I have a responsibility to know what is happening around me and to care about what is going on even if I can’t directly influence the situation or bring about change. There have certainly been times when I have had to switch off though and stop watching/listening/reading etc. because I was finding it too much. Haiti for instance or the floods here in Queensland or the footage of 9/11. I could not bear to keep watching.

I also think a lot of what is presented as news by the media is just bullshit. I just don’t take that stuff on board. I don’t feel any responsibility to care about such stuff. To answer your question directly though @jonsblond…. I do not care about what is happening to Paris Hilton and any of her ilk.

“My weakness is that I care too much”
I was born a Crusader… I used to love fighting for causes, going to battle for the disenfranchised and standing up for an ideal—but eventually realized many people, frankly, don’t give a damn and will expedite more energy shooting down your enthusiasm or methods than fighting for the other side. And, eh… there are times your ‘allies’ will cheer you as you go out on that limb then, you look around, they’re gone.

Cynical? Yeah, a little, but, I still do care about many things. I learned to save my energy for battles I have a fighting chance to win. I still carry my soapbox around with me, still light up when a good discussion comes up and I care because I can’t really live any other way—
