General Question

I'm thinking about going to my first spin class at my local gym in about an hour. What should I expect?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) July 6th, 2011

I’ve never been big on gym classes but enjoy (stationary) bike riding. I’m a little nervous going into this that I’m going to die of not being able to keep up (I walk daily but am no way in good shape!).

Any suggestions?

Bring water, a towel to wipe your sweat away & be prepared to feel as though you may die. Sit near the back for your first class ;)

Have fun & enjoy!

Be prepared for your buttocks to be bruised! Don’t know if I did something wrong, but I couldn’t sit for days and haven’t been back!

@BBSDTfamily you probably didn’t adjust the seat properly…if you sit too close your upper thighs hit the seat bottom Many people don’t go back for more ;)

Water, towel. If you can’t keep up, then do your best. The following is important-It’s not a contest. Getting into shape is a selfish experience. You don’t owe the class anything.

Well! I’ll never do that again….. whoaaaa.

I lasted for half… at my own pace (which was not very impressive compared to the rest of the clas). I was happy that the lights were off and I was in the back of the room! Glad to be back home in a chair (and soon shower then bed!!)

@SamIAm You went, you did it & you almost conquered it..½ is better than not at all. Maybe take an ibuprofen before bed tonight ;)

Thanks @SpatzieLover! I appreciate the encouragement. I don’t feel like I failed, and I would like to try doing other stuff… I feel good, it was just too intense for me.

It’s too intense for a lot of people. There’d be a need to feel bad only if you were in perfect shape. Try a Zumba class if you haven’t already. The fun factor helps the hour breeze by.

@SpatzieLover: I was thinking about that too! But that seems like it’d be more fun with a friend… does that sound right?

It is more fun with a friend or a fun co-worker. Almost all of my husband’s office takes a Zumba class together two nights a week. Several of the ladies and men have lost considerably weight from it, too :)
