Do you believe in the supernatural? If you do, why?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) July 10th, 2011

This hasn’t really been asked in a while, so here it goes.

Do you believe in the supernatural? What is your reasoning?

Nope, it’s all natural, maybe sometimes just on a higher plane of understanding.

filmfann's avatar

I believe in God. You probably can’t get more supernatural than that.

I also believe that we are constantly being scrutinized by Evil, just waiting for the right moment to fuck with us.

ETpro's avatar

No, I do not believe in the supernatural. Supernatural doesn’t even compute as a word. It doesn’t make good sense.

The natural is all that is. If there is some spiritual force or entity we haven’t measured or perceived yet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t natural. It simply means it’s currently not part of our knowledge of the natural. 5,000 years ago, nobody believed in nuclear physics or fusion power. But that didn’t stop our Sun and all the other trillions of stars in the Universe from using fusion power every day. I believe that which is, is; and that which is not is not. There’s nothing more to it.

Some_Ghost's avatar

Cmon man, what do you think?

DrBill's avatar

I consider all things natural, although I have had this happen that not I, nor anyone else can explain.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

I take the agnostic path when it comes to the supernatural. I’ve only known a couple of people that I was around almost daily who shared experiences of their ongoing supernatural experiences with a particular person. Until I see personal proof, I’m not willing to buy into it. Nor am I willing to rule out that it exists.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Some_Ghost We need pics. Or we don’t believe you.

Some_Ghost's avatar

But you wouldn’t believe it, even if you saw the pictures. Nobody does these days.

incendiary_dan's avatar

I second what @ETpro said. I add to it that I think the term comes from people being alienated from the physical world, and getting an inaccurate/incomplete picture of what is “natural”.

Edit: I think many scientists are among those people with the innacurate picture.

DominicX's avatar

I don’t believe in the supernatural or paranormal because there has been nothing in my life to lead me to believe in it. If something ever does happen, then obviously I will change my views. That’s how I feel about most “unseen” things that people believe in. But at this point, I have not had a supernatural/paranormal experience and there is nothing for me to gain by believing in the existence of such things.

Berserker's avatar

I don’t. If there are ghosts, it’s probbaly something natural we don’t understand. I’ve heard some messed up theories about ghosts before, which involve the movement of our planet around the sun, condensed types of energy and the like. Like an aftermath of a tragic event, and the memories and stories that spawn from it. Maybe it’s a psychological thing.

It’s really not hard for people to believe in things. I used to think I witnessed at least one haunting once in my life. To this day I still can’t explain it, but I’m sure it has an explanation. But while it was happening, I wasn’t thinking none of that. I also suffer from nocturnal paralysis. When I was living in a rooming house, the guy in the room next to mine ended up committing suicide. I had a bad episode that night, most likely caused by all that day’s stress. I was convinced his ghost was haunting me. I even saw it, through dream/illusion.
Later, I found out what my problem was, by reading shit on a website.
This started when I was about 15, but it was minor and few and far between It intensified in my early 20’s. People back in the day who suffered from nocturnal paralysis used to think that demons and vampires came to torment them in their sleep. Today, a lot of people think it’s aliens. I thought it was a ghost.

Stuff like that tells me we know so little, so I can’t just believe in stuff we make up to explain what we don’t understand, or what frightens us.

I’m not saying ghosts don’t exist, I just don’t believe in them.

Fun stuff about ghosts;
Apparently, ghosts need a source of energy to manifest themselves, such as things like power lines, or big places with a lot of electricity, like a hospital or a school.
Teenagers, with their developing hormones, are a good source of energy that ghosts can use to manifest. They are apparently more likely to see ghosts than anyone else.

Ghosts don’t like being called ghosts. Apparently, to them, it’s like calling a black person the n word.

Ya I’m a Christian and I believe in God! When I was younger, the reasoning was because my parents believed in God. As I grew older, I came to have my own experiences with God and that’s the reason I believe currently.

ETpro's avatar

@incendiary_dan If you’re going to agree with what I said, then I am going to return the favor and agree with what you added to it.

incendiary_dan's avatar

@ETpro Then I’m going to return that favor by…uh… saying you smell nice today? I got nothin’. :P

Berserker's avatar

Yall smell like death eating a cracker. XD

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Symbeline Someone’s druthering.

Berserker's avatar

Something wicked this way was drank. XD

redfeather's avatar

I only believe in them when I’m walking in spooky places at night. But then I set myself straight and say it’s probably just a hobo, not a ghost.

Schroedes13's avatar

@redfeather or the ghost of a hobo!!!

KateTheGreat's avatar

@redfeather Or a hobo dressed as a ghost! Oh, the possibilities!

redfeather's avatar

Damn it, @KatetheGreat! Now I’m gonna be terrified! And I can’t run from them now. I’ll beat them with my crutch.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@redfeather Just don’t break another foot while in the process, please.

Schroedes13's avatar

@redfeather yes, try and hit it and then we’ll figure out this mystery….if it crumples, it’s a regular hobo. If you hit it and it doesn’t crumple, it’s a hobo on PCP! And if your crutch goes through it, it’s a hobo’s ghost!

Berserker's avatar

Undead hobos. Fuck, this thread is great.

incendiary_dan's avatar

Or a hobo named Ghost?

redfeather's avatar

@Schroedes13 this is the second time I’ve discussed a hobo on PCP today. Strange.

Schroedes13's avatar

lol…that is eerie!

KateTheGreat's avatar

Or a ghost named “hobo” that pretends he is on PCP to fit in with the others.

Schroedes13's avatar

Ghosts don’t do drugs! That’s just science!

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Schroedes13 The ghosts in my mind do. O.o

FutureMemory's avatar

Do you believe in the supernatural?

No.

incendiary_dan's avatar

@Schroedes13 I can’t argue with that logic. That’s some cold, hard fact right there.

TexasDude's avatar

Nope, but it’s fun to think about. I love a good ghost story.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@redfeather We need to make a good ghost story about ghostie hobos on PCP. Then tell it to @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Hahahaha.

redfeather's avatar

@KatetheGreat Um, yes. Meet me somewhere private and we’ll get to brainstorming ;)

KateTheGreat's avatar

@redfeather We still need to figure out what we’re going to do for our album, “40 Ounce Booty Bounce.”

TexasDude's avatar

40 Ounce Booty Bounce

My attention… you haz it.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard It’s the rap album that @redfeather and I will be creating. ;)

Your_Majesty's avatar

Definitely no, but I really hope that it is REAL. Most people around where I live claim that supernatural phenomenons are exist (I know they just absorb those artificial visual effect from TV!) so that the chance that we’ll not perish forever but remain as wandering souls would come in to reality.

ucme's avatar

Depends on your definition of supernatural. I kind of believe in spirits & ghosts, but zombies & shit…........get the fuck outta dodge!

OpryLeigh's avatar

Yes, I do. I have no experience (that I know of) but I still believe that there is something more.

cockswain's avatar

I used to, but haven’t for years now. I like supernatural movies that don’t get overly religious though. Those ghost hunting shows are pretty funny. What a bunch of dorks.

You know what I never got about ghost stories? Why ghosts stick around houses. Like they seriously can’t move past drywall and studs? Asphalt roofing too much for them to pass through? If I took a wall off a house, would that free the ghost? What about two walls? If one wall is standing on a foundation, will that keep the ghost there?

I think the supernatural is to help people feel reality is more interesting. Guess what, the universe is already really interesting. More interesting than ghosts and vampires. Want to understand the universe more? Study lots of math. Is that a lot of fun? No it isn’t. Should I ask more questions? Probably not.

TexasDude's avatar

@redfeather oh it certainly came to me in a dream as well.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@redfeather I don’t think he knows how to.

TexasDude's avatar

You guys know me the best.

redfeather's avatar

Fiddle, will you shake it in the background while Kate and I rap?

TexasDude's avatar

Absolutely.

KateTheGreat's avatar

So we don’t get to shake it? Shiiittttt. What kind of video is this?

redfeather's avatar

Of course we do. We just need a dime piece in the video, c’mon.

martianspringtime's avatar

I kind of do. I mean I wouldn’t swear on it, but I don’t see why it couldn’t be real. I don’t outright say there can’t be a god, and although I know a lot of stories you hear about ~supernatural experiences~ are made up, when I hear them from people I know who don’t even believe in the paranormal themselves, I start to feel a little convinced. I don’t know. Ghosts or something like them could definitely be real. No one really knows what happens after death (if anything) so who am I to say I know that the spirit doesn’t come back on vacation?
I do think aliens could be real. The universe is so big I can’t see how we would be the only ones here.
