What is a cool way to incorporate a cement block wall into a room design?

Asked by grrgold (91points) July 11th, 2011

I am trying to re-design part of my business. The entire place is finished in natural woods, brown tones, and modern lines. There is a small area that I want to make stand out from the rest. I had thought of making it more industrial looking. two of the walls are concrete blocks currently painted in a light tan color. Other than painting them cement gray, what other inexpensive finishes or ideas can someone suggest without having to cover them with drywall?

What about using cork self-stick tiles ?

How about adding some natrual stone? With the wood and brown tones, it seems that slate or travertine would be beautiful!

You could make one or oth of them gallery walls with mounted pictures and lighting.

There are some really cool texturing effects that you can use on cement, almost like adobe. If you Google “textured cement”, you see both commercial installers and do-it-yourself projects.

Here’s what I think, pick a bold colour maybe red or another warm bright earthy color that will go with the all of the earthy tones then paint the concrete bricks that colour, then add some black shelves with white framed artsy primary coloured pictures.

It’s hard to design a room youve never seen but I have graduated in interior decorating.

@Meego I like your idea of bold colors. I will try to link a picture of the space.

@grrgold awesome! Hopefully whatever you choose will work for you :)
I think @marinelife and I are on the same lines.

‘Hire’ a graffiti artist and give carte blanche but for the industrial theme.

@rebbel I love the graffiti idea. I was thinking of just painting them back to the cement gray and doing the graffiti

@grrgold I am glad i could be of help.

Cement mortar scratch coats over the block with a scalloped or herringbone pattern can sometimes contrast the earthy feel of wood and incorporate concrete stains to tie the colors together.

..or you could add a wall sculpture, even a 3D piece that you could walk around

We just did a wall in travertine tile that is brick shapped. (2“X6” I think.) it looks way better than I expected. I just LOVE it and it was probably the least expensive tile I used in my entire remodel.
