Guitar players: What are your favorite songs to finger pick?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) July 13th, 2011

I really need to work on my finger picking technique.

Lately I’ve been working on “Europa” by Santana and I’m having so much more fun with finger picking.

Lonelily – Damien Rice

Really, you can just take any chord progression and finger pick away. I’ve spent countless hours, not playing any actual song, but just fooling around with finger picking my way through chord progressions.

I haven’t learned it yet, but when I get back to Canada, I want to learn “Marry Me” by Train!

Stairway to heaven was the first song I ever learned to finger pick. I gave Blackbird by the Beatles a good try and that was fun too. Other than that I will finger pick open tuning improvised blues licks on electric and that is my favorite to do!.

@Cruiser Haha, that was my first as well. My step-father and I try to compete and see who’s better at it.

I’m usually not a big fan of finger picking unless I’m doing banjo rolls but really, that doesn’t count. There are a few that I enjoy finger picking though.

Goodbye Young Tutor, You’ve Now Outgrown Me by Say Anything is a fun one to play but it’s an awfully sad song.

Crush by Cory Branan is a pretty good one.

I also like Billion Bees by Kevin Devine. It’s a pretty sweet one.

I finger pick all the softer parts in Buckethead’s Soothsayer. It’s not meant to be finger picked but it’s fun to do. The whole song is easy until Buckethead takes it over the edge. I can’t keep up with that though.

Like @Schroedes13 mentioned, you can pretty much finger pick any song that you know the chords to. Just hold the chord and play around with the strings. It’ll sound like the song but it will give it a different twist. Just have fun with it.

@Randy ya I’ve found myself playing around with chord progressions far more than playing any real songs. I just enjoy how you can keep going indefinitely with chord progressions and they can be different every bar. Whether it’s changing to finger picking, changing the rhythm or key, or just changing the nature of the song itself. I love it.

Julia by The Beatles is a beautiful song to fingerpick. Blackbird by The Beatles is almost as pretty. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica sounds nice. Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin is like playing a commercial. Do you know Steve Howe? He is the guitar player for the band Yes. He is very good at fingerpicking. It will be hard to learn his songs, they are advanced. Here is ‘Clap’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeyipYTS7kg Another song I’d like to learn isn’t finger picking but it’s so awesome. ‘Here My Train Comin’ by Jimi Hendrix, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lm-PCULOuc
