What is that popping sound from my water heater?

Asked by RocketGuy (15237points) July 14th, 2011

When my water heater is on (gas on and heating the water), it produces a popping sound. It sounds kind of like it is making popcorn. Do you think it will spring a leak soon? It is about 13 years old. Last time I drained it was 2008. A bunch of minerals came out.

When the hot steel body of the water heater comes in contact with the cool air, the temperature variation causes a movement in the atoms of the steel. That’s making the popping sound but if your heater is that old I do recommend you get a new one because if it’s doing it continuously it means the body has worn out.
