HP screwed me! What do I do?

Asked by ro_bot (60points) July 16th, 2011

My friend has an HP pavilion DV9000 (9718cl) Laptop (3 years old).

It just got the “black screen of death” manufactures defect (NVIDIA overheated and failed). I called HP and they said they wont cover the repair because it’s out of warranty, but they also said this was never on the recall list (yet it had the same issue), further more they still sold this crap to everyone knowing it would fail. What was their fix? Recall some of the products and update the BIOS so the fan ran permanently .

Is there anyway I can get them to repair it free of charge? Or is there anyway to further crush their reputation because they won’t replace the crap they sold?

Other unhappy customers (there’s hundreds of them): http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/HP-Pavilion-dv9700-should-also-be-on-the-list-but-it-is-not-even/td-p/59052

If you don’t mind spending $1300 on a computer that completely breaks because of a manufacturing defect that the company won’t fix, then buy from HP.

p.s. I don’t mean to sound irate, but if a company cared for their customers, they would’ve refunded my friend for the laptop or repaired it because it was an extremely common manufacturing defect.

cheers!

Sorry you had a bad experience. A company should absolutely back its product, especially when it’s a common problem. Perhaps they took a page from Microsoft’s support book. The early X-boxes and 360s were crap and always melted down but MS didn’t care. They only wanted to sell one to everybody and get people hooked on their propitiatory games.

HP also screwed me, twice. I love their 9000 series laptops but the motherboard burned out on the first one I bought after a year and nine months. I replaced it with an HPdv9823 which lasted a year and a half before its motherboard burned out.

I was not at all happy as you can imagine and despite repeated calls to HP they refused to take any responsibility as the laptops were out of warranty. Both laptops were beyond economic repair and I was told these overheating faults are common with HP laptops.

I will not be buying from HP again which is a pity as their products are great but how can you be loyal to a company that takes no responsibility for faults.

If you can still get into safe mode, you could reinstall Windows yourself. I’m not too savvy on computers, so not sure if this would be possible.

Maybe contact HP’s corporate office instead of the call center. Or ask to speak to a manager or someone in charge of all the employees. If you don’t have success in one area, don’t give up yet.

If that fails, then take it to a cheap computer repair shop. Make sure you have a copy of your operating system disc for them to use, or else they may charge extra for reinstalling it.

…. it’s 3 years old. I’m not surprised they wouldn’t cover it. I can’t remember the last time I had a laptop last more than 3 years.

Buy a replacement motherboard off of ebay, they are pretty cheap.

HP laptops are pretty good, my tx2 which is at 3 or over 3 years old just started having problems, and thats cause of the hard drive messing up, and i did drop it several times. I just gotta buy a one terabte one to upgrade for a hundred or so on ebay.

Btw, the motherboard for my tx2 new on ebay was like, $220, well worth fixing a machine worth over a grand and a half

Sorry you are having troubles, but in reality it is fairly old. The failure mode may be caused by many components, but everything has a life.
I deal with thousands of servers and PC’s everyday and call issues in daily to HP. We pay over $4,000,000 in annual maintenance and would love to have that money for other things, but if you want it running and supported you have to pay for it. This is the nature of the beast.
If you have not carried or continued a service agreement it is no different than buying any product. It is why you buy the extended warranty.
I would still rather deal with HP hardware and their support people over Dell, IBM, etc.

First, I was worried you meant Harry Potter.
You had the computer for 3 years? Did you ever vacuum it out? The dust can cause a major heat issue.
I doubt you can get Hewlett Packard to fix or replace it. 3 years is a long time, and they sell computers for a living. Maybe next time you should consider Apple.
I have had this issue with my wife’s laptop. HP fixed it, after I extended the warrenty.

Thanks everyone! I went ahead and tore the whole thing apart, covered the motherboard with tinfoil, threw several quarters on the NVIDIA chip and used a heat gun for about 5 minutes. After placing it all back together it worked for 2 weeks… I’m recommending my friend either a Mac (which I have and love) or (as @cletrans2col mentioned) a Toshiba (my buddy has one that’s probably 7 years old, haha, definitely out dated)

@Blueroses, haha, they probably did take a page from Microsofts support book… btw, my brother and I both have xbox 360 elites that are dying.. luckly Microsoft upped the warranty to 3 years (because of their 33% failure rate!)

Thanks @AshlynM. I actually couldn’t even start it, and the shop wanted ~$400 for a (most likely temporary) repair, haha.

@MrItty, true; it either dies or gets outdated. But I still think the manufacturing issues should have been resolved more professionally. I was lucky it lasted 3 years (unlike most people).

@XOIIO, yep, definitely worth it, but I would have to buy the same motherboard (if I’m not mistaken), and the same thing would happen 2–3 years down the road. Nevertheless, I gave my friend the option. Thanks.

@cletrans2col, 5 years! haha, that’s great.

@blueiiznh, Very true. The HP support agent was easy to talk with: he knew what I was talking about, and if he didn’t, he quickly found out. I’d give that 1 call I made a 15 out of 10 for customer support… compared to the 6 out of 10 for Comcast (which was my job).

@filmfann, hahahaha! I definitely wasn’t talking about Harry Potter.. although if I were, my question wouldn’t be any different: I’d be just a lost. It probably was the dust. I even found in the laptop when I tore it apart (she must have went to the beach), haha. Yep, I suggested an Apple. I’ve had my Macbook for several years and love it.

Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.

Cheers!
