General Question

Do you often find yourself reading more than one book at a time?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) July 17th, 2011

I’m in the middle of a book that I really enjoy but my book club at work started a new one and I’m very anxious to start it! Gotta get through the first though, or I’ll never finish it!

Can you read two or more books at once and not lose interest or never pick up the original one? Do you just plow through and finish the first one so you can start another?

I find myself doing it a lot during school. Being a history major, I had to read some novels and such, while I would have another book at home that I was reading for recreational purposes. I didn’t find it that hard.

I’ve often had more than one book on the go at once.

I live this way. I have a book in about every room in the house and I read whatever is there. This is so much easier than trying to remember where I misplaced my last book.

Always. I’m a history major, like @Schroedes13 so it kind of comes with the territory.

Yeah, I usually have
1) One fiction
2) One pseudo-technical book (about math, science, economics, etc…)
3) One philosophy/history/etc… book
4) Some comics/light stuff

I don’t always have all 4 but usually at least 2 or 3. I read whatever I’m in the mood for at the time.

Definitely. At least two at a time.
Usually:
For work : One Linguistics, 2–3 grammar.
For fun: any self-help, backgammon, short stories.
If the book is really good, I can’t put it down until I finish.

Always around: fashion magazines and People magazine or something like that.
I also read a lot of stuff on line.

Right now I am reading 2 books: one I cannot remove from the library, so I read it during my lunch hour. The other gets read when I go home after work.

I used to do that way too often, and end up without finishing some of them. Now I make sure not to do that too often.

I have a book next to the toilet (Introduction to Calculus), one on my night table (Donna Leon mystery) and one in the living room {Spanish 2}, plus the novel on CDs that I listen on the Walkman to when I can’t sleep.

@gailcalled I’ve always said, “there’s nothing better than differentiation when you’re taking a dump!”

A good book is integral to the process of elimination, my dear Watson.

Always at least two: one that I’m reading at bedtime and one that is for our weekly read-aloud session.

There are often one or two others, one that isn’t bedtime reading and one that I’m reading for some particular purpose (i.e., not just pleasure). If there’s more, it’s probably something I’m stalled on but haven’t decided whether to ditch.

When I’m taking a class (which I hope to be again soon), there’s always reading for that.

Always at least 2 going at once, plus schoolbooks and magazine articles.

I usually have 3 or 4 going at once. I’ve noticed though that some of them can go neglected for months at a time. Perhaps I should go back to 1 at a time.

I used to do that all the time, sometimes I would have 4 or 5 books on the go. Now. however, I struggle to find time to focus on one book.
