Are drive-in theatres coming back in style?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) July 19th, 2011

There is one drive-in theatre, in Franklin, Kentucky, that is the hit of the town. It’s always filled to capacity. In the past, most drive-in theatres have phased-out and died. Question: why is this? And, why is this one particular drive-in theatre so properous?

I’ve never been to one, and I want to experience it. It would be nice during the Summer now because it’s so warm at night. My only complaint would be bugs, though. If one was built here, I would go multiple times if I liked it.

Last Summer at the beach, some people had a projector and screen playing movies on the beach, but it was just kids movies lol.

Blackberry, you would love it. I was fortunate to have lived when the drive-ins were “in”. We use to sneak people in free, by hiding them in the trunk of the car. It was best to go to a drive-in with a non-convertible car. This way, you could “make-out” with your girlfriend and no one could watch you. The steamy car windows also helped. That was a great time in my life.

@john65pennington Haha, you probably had multiple women in the trunk.

@Blackberry I believe most drive-ins let you tune to the audio on your car radio, so you don’t have to hang a speaker in your window.

I was a projectionist at a drive-in theater for awhile. The viewing experience was absurd. It seemed to me that it was more a social event than a movie-watching experience. I suspect that people have less tolerance for poor video and audio quality today.

No. I might be going on a limb here, but I don’t think that the things that are a hit in Franklin, Kentucky are representative of the things that are a hit in the U.S.

Horror movies are great fun in a drive-in theater setting.

Bob, you may be correct, They do close the sidewalks at 9 pm and the drive-in movie lasts to around 10 pm. Thats 30 minutes past their bedtime and I guess a big deal for them. The people are very nice in that town.

@john65pennington They close the sidewalks at 9?

* NOTE TO SELF: Skip Franklin Kentucky on next trip to the U.S. *

We still have one 2 miles from me and it too is packed! I don’t think there are too many left in the Chicago area as high real estate taxes and development pretty much squeezed most out of business.

It would be nice if they returned now that I have a nice family mini-van. But I haven’t seen any opening in my neck of the woods.:-)

A drive-in theatre in some of the more hostile locations here in England Town would be an establishment that’s just had the misfortune of being ram raided.

I love drive in theaters! In my home state MO there were quite a few years ago that were torn down for their valuable lots.. which were later converted into retail and other not as awesome things. I have to drive to a neighboring state IL to even go to one but in my opinion it’s totally worth it. They aren’t really doing so well from what I can tell though – it’s never full and it’s been rumored that they’ll close anytime now.

There is still a drive-in here in Memphis, Tennessee, that alive and kicking. I don’t know how strong their kick is though. The last time I went to a drive-in movie was when SUVs were just becoming popular, and if parked directly in front of you, it could block part of the view. Right now, it is too hot to consider going to a drive-in.

Despite the potential downsides, it is worthy of adding to one’s bucket list.
