Have you ever used an ototek loop? Is it safe?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) July 20th, 2011

I’ve posted here before about my incredibly itchy ears, and I know it’s likely because I have too much wax. I’ve had that problem for years, but without having my ears flushed by a doctor, I was never able to really deal with it on my own.

But then I found this little doo-dad at the store called the ototek loop. Sounds freaking brilliant. Except it doesn’t seem like it’d be all that safe to me. I’m wondering if anyone could shed more light on it. I know it has a guard to be sure you can’t stick it too far into your ear, but still.

It looks like a tool I’ve seen doctors use, but I’m not sure I’d be comfortable using it on myself. I’d be more comfortable if the guard could be adjusted to an individual’s personal ear canal length. As far as I can tell, though, that’s not possible. Maybe you could ask your doctor to teach you how to use it safely or to teach someone else how to use it safely on you?
