My laptop screen smashed , how do I view to remove all data ?.

Asked by sandystrachan (4417points) July 21st, 2011 from iPhone

Laptop screen in a million bits , is it possible to link via some cable . Another laptop to view broken laptops contents , so I can remove personal data and programs . So I can give the laptop away as a spares repairs….. Broken laptops a Medion MIM2330 and the one I’d like to view it on is a dell inspiron 6400 .
It’s either link them or put old HDD into the dell and sort data that way .
Would I be better swapping HDD or trying to link laptops together…?

Most laptops have a port designed to be connected to an external monitor/video projector. If yours doesn’t, you can get a USB->VGA connector that should work for you.

Get a monitor (borrow one) with VGA input, you also maybe able to connect on a network ( wireless or Ethernet ) to another computer

You might be able to connect your television to your laptop through a VGA connection

Another option is you can remove the hard drive, and connect it to another machine with something like this:
USB 2.0 To Ide Sata Hdd Hard Drive Converter Cable

When my laptop become non-operational because I spilled a cup of coffee on the keyboard, my husband sucked out all the contents of the hard drive onto a disc, and just squirted it all back into my new laptop.

I second @jaytkay ‘s first response, just take the HD out and put it in another laptop.

You should be able to remove the drive with relative ease. It’s usually as simple as removing one or two screws and removing a panel on the underside of the laptop. From there you can hook it up to another PC (internally or externally, depending on the interface and your preference), and go from there.

You may be able to reach it over your network from another machine after you turn it on.

If you have a lot of data it could be pretty slow going.

But If you don’t have much to transfer, or have not so much and a GBit LAN/switch/hub to connect them with a couple cat5e patch cables… that is very viable. Heck leave your data xfer running for a day if you have to.

These days most ethernet ports are self sensing too and you might be able to plug a patch cable directly into both the laptop and a target upload host,
