Have you ever had a pen pal?

A Fluther friend and I have agreed to be pen pals. Have you ever had one? How long did it last?

I had one in grade three. It was organized by our school and another school out in BC. It was pretty epic, but we only shared two or three exchanges. Apparently it always rains out in BC.

I had one when I was in middle school. It lasted for a few years, but died off when we both reached high school. It was nice. We reconnected on Facebook a few months ago. It’s been great catching up with her again.

I have friends who email me, but I am the worst at writing letters and maintaining contact. It is one of my biggest shames. I try. I mean to keep in touch. I fail.

I got really interested in international correspondence when I was in junior high school and had several pen friends: one in England, one in Scotland, one in India, one in Iceland, and one in Australia. I kept up a regular correspondence (paper letters mailed through the postal service) with all of them for several years. The one in Australia came to be about as close a friend as you can have without meeting. We continued for nearly ten years, on into college, and lapsed only after she got married.

Yes….I met a girl in Germany while on student exchange in high school and we stayed in touch for 4 years until she got married when she just stopped writing.

I had quite a few when I was in my early teens, I used to find them online and mail them, or sometimes they would mail me because they found my profile. Then the internet got better, and instant chat became the norm.

Oh, geez, years ago. When I Was 7 or 8. Mine was from Iceland? I don’t remember. It lasted maybe a month.

It’s pretty exciting to get a real letter with exotic stamps and a foreign postmark, knowing that it was actually held and handwritten by someone far away and that it crossed continents and oceans to come to you. E-mail just doesn’t deliver the same thrill. Convenience is overrated.

@ruby12, and where are you? Most of us flutherfolk are in the U.S., as I am, but we do have many overseas members.

I have had people to whom I regularly wrote, Now I consider everybody here a pen pal.

Yes. I had a pen pal when I attended grade school in Las Vegas. I believe it was during 3rd grade. We kept in touch for at least a year. She lived on a farm in Indiana and had the same first name as I did. I loved our interaction. I still have the letters she sent me.

I now live on a farm in Illinois and have wondered about her occasionally.
