What kind of plastic bags are used to pack food?

Is there a special kind of plastic used to package food—like made out of material that is non-toxic?

Polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) are by far the most commonly used plastics for food bags. They are approved by the USDA for direct food contact, though only if made from 100% virgin resins (i.e. not recycled).
