What are some interesting ways for me to stay healthy, even away from home?

Asked by laineybug (5331points) July 22nd, 2011

I’ve been using Wii Fit for at least half an hour every day for about two weeks and eating healthier. But now I’m at my mom’s house and we don’t have a Wii here, or very healthy food. I don’t have a bike here and I can’t go for walks because it’s not the safest neighborhood. I want to keep up with being healthier but still have fun with it, and the only things I can use to get any kind of exercise are the stairs and the empty backyard that we share with our tenants. This is important to me and any ideas will be helpful.

Stairs may be a bit boring, but they are fabulous for fitness. Queue up some good steppin’ music on your ipod and have at “em!

Go buy a 10 or 15 lb weight and lift it whenever you get bored.

Also, do calisthenics almost every day (remember that taking days off for rest is important). Jogging in place, jumping jacks, etc until you literally can’t do anymore.

I started doing this about two months ago, and I have lost about 10 lbs of fat, gotten pretty buff, and my abs are showing for the first time since I was 17.

Oh, and don’t drink soft drinks or eat fast food. EVER.

More info.

Ask your mom if you can go to the supermarket with her and buy some healthier food. Maybe you can make her a meal, or make something together as a mom daughter project?

If your mom has on demand or a DVD player maybe order or buy a zumba DVD or whatever exercise you like? Or, just turn up the music for an hour and dance around the house and do whatever chores need to get done.

If there is a mall nearby you could walk through the mall for 45 minutes a few times a week maybe? But be careful not to shop.

I find I can actually do a lot just using my own body weight and a little space in the living room or the backyard – no equipment necessary at all. I do (or at least attempt) a combi of pushups, side-lifts, leg lfts, squats and lunges, sit-ups etc. in rotation so all my muscles get worked. Some seemingly simple yoga positions and moves that involve just keeping balance and holding the pose can be a tremendous workout e.g. supporting myself on just my right hand and right foot on the ground while holding my left foot in the air with my left hand – works on both strength and balance. It’s also a lot of fun just to see I could do it!

Help your mom around the house. Garden, vacuum, do laundry, mow the lawn. Do it with enthusiasm to get the best workout. Be active!

Good for you for realizing the importance of regular physical exercise in maintaining good health.

You can do a lot of excellent exercises with one of those big exercise balls. Department stores sell them cheap and while you’re at it pick an exercise bungee cord as well as an exercise roll-out wheel (they all come with instructions and suggested exercises). For less than 50 bucks you can have your own workout gym that you can take wherever you go. Also don’t forget about sit-ups, push-ups and stretching.

Where there is a will there a way. You can do it!

I help my adult grandsons stay healthy by having them scrub the bathroom from top to bottom on a regular basis, plus keep the kitchen appliances, walls, counters, cupboards and floor sparkling clean. About once a month, they vacuum every corner of the family room, which involves moving the furniture.

Use a jump rope, get a hoola-hoop and walk whenever you can when you’re going out of the house. You can do jumping-jacks in place, do crunches—and push-ups, anything physical movement that can make you sweat is good. Put some upbeat music on while you do it and it will be more fun.

I found a bunch of workout routines on you tube. See if you can put one of them on full screen and have at it.

Go to the supermarket, treat your mom to some awesome healthy food so she’ll want to eat that way more often (buy a cookbook for her – go crazy!)

Stay healthy by getting the kids toys (like @beaglelove had suggested)

Also, it depends how long you’ll be at your mom’s. If for a long time, commit to adapting to yet a still healthy lifestyle, but in different conditions. If for a short, or relatively short time, splurge a little bit, adapt, but don’t be too self conscious as a little time can’t do too much.. or at least not too much for you to fix when you get back home!

Happy fluthering!

As the mom in question, ahem, I just wanted to clarify that we didn’t go grocery shopping just yet. There is usually fruit and yogurt in the house, at the very least! :)

If you’re looking for physical activity, listen to all those lovely people up there, and do some housework, girlie! Remember that we do have On Demand, so you can probably find some workouts to watch, too. Love you!

And as the mom in question, @augustlan forgot both fruit and yogurt when she went to the grocery store without me.
