Why does my PS3 tell me I've used 14 GB of space when I'm sure I haven't?

Asked by shrubbery (10326points) May 1st, 2008

I have a ps3 with a 40GB harddrive. I only have two games with saved progresses on there, GH3 and Gran Turismo, I can’t recall exactly how big the saved progresses are but less than 1GB each. I have about 2 CDs worth of music on there and that’s all. I have made 1 internal memory card for PS1 games which is 112KB I think. When I check the memory settings it’s out of 37GB which I understand as 3GB being used to run the system etc, but then it says I have 23GB out of 37GB left, which implies I have used 14. I don’t know how to see a list of exactly everything that is on there but as I said I’m sure I haven’t used 14GB of space.

yeah, but does it really have a reason to lie to you?

shrubbery's avatar

No, I have only ever shown it love and kindness… so whyyyy?

shrubbery's avatar

or if it truly is telling the truth, how can I have used 14GB without knowing it?

cheebdragon's avatar

ill check mine…

cheebdragon's avatar

where do i look from the menu?

shrubbery's avatar

ooh um sorry i don’t have mine with me at the moment, it’s in settings somewhere haha

cheebdragon's avatar

okay I found it and it says I have 20gb of free space, I probably have about 7–8 games and I have I think 4 game demos, and 1 theme on it. So maybe its your music or the ps1 card, because I don’t have either of those on mine

shrubbery's avatar

well nah because it actually tells me how much music there is and how much space the ps1 card takes up and it’s not much at all. does it save the whole games somewhere on there as well as the saved progress perhaps?

cheebdragon's avatar

does your sound sometimes not work? Because mine only works every once in awhile and I heard its a problem with the 40gb ps3 and the only way to fix it is to get a new one or trade it in and pay the $100 more for the 80gb

cheebdragon's avatar

I don’t think it saves the whole game

shrubbery's avatar

ubuh? you’re not serious? well no my sound works fine except you know how when you’re listening to songs with earphones sometimes half only comes out in one ear so if only one ear works you can only hear half the song or you know only the singing or only the music? i think it’s like that, but that might just be my tv cause i’ve only got the white and yellow plugs in the back of my tv. but yes in guitar hero two player you can only hear player 1 and player 2 is super quiet

it better not have some stupid problem because my dad bought it for me for my birthday and garrr stuff like this always happens to us haha we buy something that’s supposed to be super awesome cool and it has some stupid manufacturing problem but you can’t return it

cheebdragon's avatar

maybe its because mine is set up with the hdmi cable, its really annoying because the sound works in the menu but not always in the game. if there wasnt such a big difference between the a/v cable and the hdmi cable i would switch back to the a/v = (

hey is your ps3 connected to the internet? because maybe you just need to update the software?

shrubbery's avatar

Oh yeah i see, so it’s it better with the hdmi cable? cause i would get one if they weren’t so expensive haha and also I’m not allowed to have the ps3 in the loungeroom where the hdtv is so i have to use it on a crappy little one with only av inputs but i have to convince my parents that it’s being wasted on the little tv haha maybe if i get the hdmi cable they’ll see how much better it could be on the big tv… but anyway, it usually is connected to the internet yes but not for the last couple of days, i did check though a couple of days ago and there were no new ones, i’ve only done one big one since i got it, and one for gran turismo which took all night to download… maybe that’s what takes up the space, the software updates?

Because the PS3 sucks by comparison to the other systems of this gen?

shrubbery's avatar

but why? and why is there so much hype about how awesome they are then? truth be told i would have been happy with a ps2 for my birthday which is what i asked for but i’m not gonna turn around to my dad and say i didn’t want that after he had the initiative to go and look at all the different kinds and choose the one he thought was best why do they (not just sony, other people too) tell us it’s good if it’s not?

Just be happy you didn’t get a Xbox360 or it probably would have eaten your disc or given you the ring of death by now. My friend has had his replaced THREE times. That’s just stupid.

shrubbery's avatar

haha really? that’s unlucky. anyway, i’m not picky i don’t use it for super high tech gaming on the internet or whatever i just wanted something that i could play guitar hero and my old ps1 games on and then buy some cheap second hand ps2 games and dad chose a ps3 which is awesome i am eternally grateful and hopefully he’ll let me plug it into the big tv when we get some blu-ray dvds but what i’m saying is i’m not a super gaming person in fact i suck at most games i play purely for fun but i do know that 14gb is a lot of space to ‘lose’ and not know how…

Randy's avatar

@ Maverick- I’ve had a 360 since launch and never had a problem. I’m on my second one but that’s because I traded in my white one for an elite. I just like the black better and the 120GB hard drive is nice. Anyways, for you shrubbery, the PS3 sounds good. I’d like to have something to play the old final fantasy games on. I’m sure your memory problem is some sorta glitch, sorry I don’t know anything about it though.

the reason there is so much space “missing” is because of the updates. Ps3 is a update memory hog and everything bonus like PS3 home uses up about 4 gigs of memory but anyhow would anybody give me there ps3 screen name??
