Is it just me or is google off today?

Asked by everephebe (11611points) July 25th, 2011

When I searched today, the engine didn’t feel up to its usual snuff. Anyone else experiencing this? Has google changed something recently?

Google is being overly pedantic today, and not giving me the results I’m looking for. “Did you mean?” No. No, I did not mean that!

Haven’t had any problems with Google. But for some reason I was just logged out of fluther and eBay. Nothing on my computer or browser changed. This just happened 30 seconds ago.

Seems alright to me.

I’m in China, so Google messes up regularly! lol

@Schroedes13 Haha, yeah… I bet. I was wondering if it was because google was being routed through China or something.

I did notice. I thought my Google-fu was off. The accuracy of predicting the information I’m looking for is far inferior to what I’m used to from the Goog.

Google is under constant siege by schmucks who, without knowing the secret of the special search sauce, attempt to game the algorithm according to its visible behavior in order to spam your search results with their crap. Google does a good job of foiling these fools, but no system is perfect. Also, it’s good to remember that the job that Google does is a very nearly impossible one when you consider the size of the index, the rate of changes, number of simultaneous users and return speed. Frankly I’d be willing to forgo some of the fancy crap Google does for me (no, thanks, Google, I know what I meant- and if I spelled it wrong I either will correct it myself or I meant to do it) and wait a little longer for results if they could be a little more relevant. Also, I would fall to my knees and sing hosannas if they would just order search results by age (starting with most recent) by default.

UGH I hate stale searches.

Try my google, it seems to be working just fine. It let me search for “stuff” perfectly just a moment ago. Here’s the link www.google.com.

Edit: this is the stuff I was talking about. I find 5:10–5:55 to make a pretty good point about neurotoxins and catching our heads on fire.
