Why do they always use great hit songs for t.v. commercials and commercials for upcoming movies?

Do you notice how commercial producers often use hit songs (golden oldies, popular melodies) to advertise their products on t.v., or movies that are about to be released in theatres? And the products they are trying to push are always silly things or stupid movies, which seem to do nothing but degrade the great songs used to advertise them. Just tonight, I turned on the t.v. and saw a movie I would never go watch at the theatre, yet they played one of my favorite Depeche Mode hits to sell it. Why do commercial producers do this? Don’t they know it’s annoying and counterproductive?
